How is this for a timeline and a reason for it all.

Teo is gay. He knows he gay. But he doesn't want to come out gay. In 2009, when Teo was a freshman at Notre Dame, he doesn't want his teammates knowing he is gay. So he and his buddy (who may even be Teo's gay lover) come up with this fake gf story to stave off any questions or rumors about why he is never with a girl. So as time goes by and he keeps getting himself more and more into this lie, it gets more elaborate, he and the buddy come up with this story about the gf getting sick (luekimia) to further his Heisman and NFL draft goals and to get him the fame and publicity he needs to achieve that. A month before the MSU game the buddy gets in this car accident, and that gives Teo the idea to have the girl get in one. Finally the media is blowing the story up, and they feel it may be getting too big, so they come up with the story that the girl died. Who knows, the day the grandmother died may have even given them this idea.

But then the media blows the story up even more, and he just goes with it. Burying himself even further until it finally comes out around Christmas.

This is sort of the theory I'm on too. I think him just being that stupid doesn't make sense, but it can start to make sense if he was gay and basically in the WOAT position for a gay man (mormon, Notre Dame, star football player).
