His interviews are sickening. He makes it seem like he has been in love with this girl for 4+ years and they have some deep connection. When in actuality he is hardly connected to her at all, and is most likely seeing other girls on the side. Once he heard of the car accident and dying of leukemia he took hold of this story because he knew it would benefit him. This is the sickest part of everything he did. He actually thought she was real and she died, and he could just use it and move on no consequences because he actually wasn't that invested emotionally.

he's some Hawaiian Samoan Mormon Notre Dame Catholic goof who isn't supposed to be out banging sloots on the reg anyway, so i don't see the problem at all with saying "no i didn't meet her, didn't work out BECAUSE AS YOU KNOW I DON'T HAVE A CAR, and neither does she, or her brother borrowed it, and she was on the other side of the island", or whatever. none of that is a lie, why can't he say that exactly?

A few pages back somebody mentioned that people get caught by Nigerian scammers- those people are not in their 20s and didn't grow up on the internet. They have the excuse of ignorance, Te'o doesn't.

For Oski's post- UW has a huge Hawaiian/Pacific Islander population. I partied with them a lot when I was in school (and with some Tuiasosopos), and I'd say they were super welcoming (especially to the weird fat white kid) more than insular or anything. If you're looking for a cultural reason to explain his naivete, I'd go religion before race.

It seems like Te'o right now, for the most part, has wriggled off the hook.

It seems he was not complicit, but guilty of making up portions (i.e face to face meetings) to make the online affair thing seem like a more legit relationship.

Sounds like 95% of the story is legit dupe, with 5% embellishment.

My question is this: what more could come out to really hurt Te'o? Is there anything?

That part about "I'll tell you on the 16th" seems fishy.

If this was part of the story, why did ND say they were expecting Manti to disclose everything on "Monday" (the 14th.

It seems they would have just told him, "okay, once you get this wrapped up on the 16th, you can reveal the hoax" (or whatever).

I think you are forgetting the extent to which his religion produces sheltered, naive, trusting individuals. Read up a little on the Mormons. A great many of them actively participate in those fake vitamin/door-to-door knive selling/Amway wacky pyramid schemes. They're kind of stunted in their ability to recognize the same obvious scam that you and I would laugh about doing.

my guess is roniahh started it off as a joke then passed it on to his cousin who started actually developing a relationship w. manti eventhough she knew she was lying about her identity she liked the attention and probably needed a friend during her battle with leukemia .

Te'o claiming that he had doubts about the relationship in another ESPN article. Guess he's reading about how stupid and naive he's coming off and wants to cover those tracks by saying that other people believed she was real as well. IMO, all he's doing is saying that he surrounds himself with other stupid people.

If Te'o really had his doubts, wouldn't he search the internet to verify this information? I mean this type of **** is pretty easy to figure out with a 5 minute Google search. Perhaps the girl who heard it should have jumped on this.

Seems that everything is going to plan for him. Keeping people in the dark keeps people from cutting straight to the truth. ESPN makes no bones about being Notre Dame nuthuggers. They continue to ignore the web of lies and half-truths being set up by Te'o and his team of agents and PR reps. ESPN plays him up as a young man who was deceived by evil men and women.
