te'o is handling this as if he still has something to hide.

if he was scammed and hoodwinked he would come out and say it in front of the world for everyone to see, there's no fear in that, let the people do the investigating just like deadspin. There can be villains and fall men/women for that. but when you're making things up as you go, which is what i suspect is actually happening here, you have to play things by ear. appearing on espn off camera is part of that play

This whole Te'o as the victim thing might ring mostly true, but it's clear he helped foster the lies, he actively led people to believe they had met, he played up the relationship, never once mentioned in all his interviews it was online only, etc.

Then after he knew he still lied about it.

He might have thought it was a real person, but also played up a silly online flirtation as a serious relationship for publicity.

And that's BEST case scenario.
