I've never seen Catfish but if it's an MTV Reality show that means it's at least 95% fictional and staged.

I know this type of thing was a lot more common when the internet was "new" to people. But this isn't 1997 anymore, people are way more savy, or at least should be. Te'o has lived basically his whole life in the internet age. We live in the age of digital cameras, Facebook, facetime, Skype, etc. It's basically impossible to legitimately pull off a deception of this magnitude for an extended period of time without the other party being in willful denial.

For example I had a friend who knew this girl, was quite overweight, like 300+ lb who mostly just stayed at home, never had a boyfriend, that sort of thing, got into an "online relationship" with a solider deployed to Iraq. It went on for months, and naturally she began sending him ****, like ipads, cash, etc. Obviously the guy wasn't real and it was just a big scam. Somone like THAT strikes me as someone who could willfully convince themselves to overlook the stupidity of it all.

Te'o does not strike me as that sort, the dude is a star football player, if he wanted a girlfriend he could been banging ugly Notre Dame broads by the dozen. He also seems normal enough in interviews and such.

My gut is that Te'o was in on it, probably never intended it to go to the level it did, just spiraled out of control and his lies had to keep getting bigger.

I know the Kicker & Punter of whatever NFL team Te'o goes to will be happy for a while, since Manti will likely be the butt of jokes in that locker room for a good amount of time.

I guess the idea of the media/ESPN who suck this kind of stuff up way too much getting duped doesn't bother me much

Skip doesn't take the stupidest side of every argument. He's in line with a lot of SE opinions more than you'd think. It's just the times that he's trolling or way off gets by far the most attention.
