I can't tell if this is just confirmation bias on my part or not. I'm inclined to say yes; I don't think I can come to any sort of reasonably unbiased conclusion at this point, but his body language and tone does match up with my preconceived notions of guilt.

In other words, I agree with you, but I don't know how meaningful either of our opinions are at this point.

UPDATE: Pete Thamel references these letters in this article from Sports Illustrated. Te’o mentions a specific letter before the Michigan game to Thamel and claimed Kekua’s brother Kainoa read it to him. Thamel’s article references a letter received for the Senior Day game against Wake Forest. Thamel claims Te’o was read the letters by family members before being emailed them.

Te’o told the Notre Dame interviewer the last letter came before the Stanford game on Oct. 13 (interview more than four weeks after that game). Te’o then told Thamel he received another letter from her before the Wake Forest game on Nov. 17.

I would think if he pretended to actually be that girl from her pictures there might be some legal issues, but just using her picture doesn't seem like that big of a deal. There's nothing to get. It was a movie, and now a TV show, about basically exactly what happened to Manti. People pretending to be other people online, falling in love with them, etc.

Falls big. Earlier itt, I said that even if he isn't gay, he should come out to save face and get sympathy again. Now, I'm realizing that's very wrong for him because he has the potential for an NFL career.

Agreed. But playing the "I was hoaxed card" with a PR team and agency paying people to 'fess up and say Te'o had nothing to do with it works. The problem is Te'o unknown value to an agency. High-risk, minimal reward.

At this point, his future professional representation is in his ear and you may be right.

Keep it ambiguous and be a Rorshach test. He's so beloved and sympathetic that those who feel that way will say he was duped; those more cynical will say he made it up; and those who think he's not a bad guy but knew she didn't exist will say there's a good reason for all of this (gay) and understand why he won't admit it because of what it would do for his career and relationship with his family.

Had an interesting discussion with my office mate this morning. We've all discussed the Te'o/gay possibility, but what if it was the hoaxer instead acting out on his own latent homoerotic desires? Think about it: Feigning being a woman to get really emotionally intimate with another man--this does explain the massive time investment on the perp's end if he was getting more out of it than simple lulz.

yeah i thought about this and it seems the pretty logical atm . in the video posted about 10 posts ago manti was describing lenna as very religious and giving him religious inspiration and we know roniahh is the son of a preacher ....also according to reports roniahh tried to seduce other guys but had been caught before . so this is definetly possible

Isn't the most likely scenario something like this:

1) One of his friends jumps on the grenade and assumes full responsability
2) He pretends to be really mad
3) He sticks to that story, and say as much to NFL scouts and staff
4) He gets drafted at worst by Carolina at 14, who figure he can't be much crazier than people who shoot others, do or sell drugs, etc...

I dunno, I think the ending of this isn't going to be as epic as many hope for. The really fun stuff is going to be the locker room talk, and the amazing jokes on the field we'll miss. The other thing is if his father is a giant homophobe, and he felt he had to invent this to keep his dad loving him. That would be pretty messed up too.

Luckily for him if he is straight, he can use his nfl money (whatever it ends up being) to get girls in the future. Without money he is just a bad boyfriend for not visiting her.
