FWIW, this isn't really that big of a holdup on this. They were only "dating" for a few months, so that could have easily just been a little lie added on by Teo for it to make sense that they met in person at some point. If this story were actually true, it would be that Te'o "met" the girl online in late 2011/early 2012, and then just added some embellishments after the fact so people wouldn't know he had an online-only girlfriend.

Exactly. If you look at the timeline and also look for a logical reason how this could all have happened this way? To me it makes the most sense.

His buddy (gay lover) gets in a car accident

Gf dies-he hopes the initial publicity will push his heisman hopes, he milks it for all its worth, then it dies
Story gets even bigger then he planned
Someone blows the whistle
All hell breaks loose

I guess it's not so much that I hate Schaap. It's that he is always the one assigned to the human interest stories that make me sick.

The more that comes out the more confused I am, it really seems like he was getting trolled really hard, maybe the first 1-2 years they didn't talk as much or weren't planning on meeting each other or something. Maybe it was just starting to heat up and he was getting too much publicity so the trolls freaked out.

Just don't buy it. No explanation. He could have flown to California on the weekend of Sept 29, 2012 as ND was on a bye week. Makes zero sense.

Even if this is true, I don't understand why he decided to say they met in 2009. I mean, Notre Dame played at Stanford in 2011; he could have easily said they met in person then, which would have been about six weeks after the first tweet from him to her. (Just say she sent him a DM as a fan or something.)

It goes into a really bad place when this happens right as his grandma passes. It seems like whoever was trolling him hates him/ is super jealous or something, or he had to be in on it.

Maybe he was emotional when the grandma died and he caused him to want to end the bull**** with the fake gf and have to continue to deal with that.
