Exactly. If you look at the timeline and also look for a logical reason how this could all have happened this way? To me it makes the most sense.

He enters college and doesnt want it known he is gay
Comes up with story explaining why never with a girl
Story gets more and more elaborate, as all lies do
They think "hey, what a great story line for publicity for the Heisman run-my gf has luekimia
His buddy (gay lover) gets in a car accident
Gf gets in car accident
Gf dies-he hopes the initial publicity will push his heisman hopes, he milks it for all its worth, then it dies
Story gets even bigger then he planned
Someone blows the whistle
All hell breaks loose
