In one of San Fran Justin's discovery tweets it hints that the Catfish movie/show was the motivation for the hoax, but the hoax started in 2009 - years before Catfish. Maybe the perpetrators were just trying to get in touch with the Catfish guy after the fact, but the timing is kind of weird.

I think it's definitely more likely Te'o is in on it with his buddy than not. Seems like all these "damning" tweets are from people that aren't close to Tuiassoppo or Te'o. Whereas we know Te'o and 'soppo are/were close enough to tweet at each other as recent as the summer.

I feel like I need to watch more episodes of Catfish for research. The only one I saw was the episode tonight where the catfish turns out to be some gay guy from a rural community that converses with straight people as a woman as an outlet for his sexuality. That I can understand. Are there actually cases where chicks spend hours on the phone for months pretending to be some guy's GF just to **** with him? That seems a little more out there.
