If I'm Manti...this is what I think I'd say.

First off talk about how religious I am, maybe say I wasn't very experienced with girls, talk about being super busy with football on campus. A girlfriend online was an easy way to talk to girls given my time limitations. Say you had this online relationship for a while, then realized it was a hoax somehow. Say I wanted to stop the lie, but everyone kept asking about it, and it all spiraled out of control and I didn't know how to stop it without embarrassing myself or becoming an issue for the team. I never thought it would end up being this big of a deal, I'm so embarrassed for myself, I'm sorry to the team and the people who think I lied to them, go Notre Dame. Thanks.

It really was a weirdly perfect storm. You make up a little story in week 2 about your fake dead girlfriend, and against all odds you end up going undefeated and finishing in second place in the Heisman voting, meaning that it never goes away. The real villain is obviously the Pitt kicker
