I think there's lots of different things I can buy into in regards to Teo actually being innocent here. The problem is that all of them revolve around a girl spending years of her life on the phone with him just to play a joke. How is that even possible? She didn't even try to get money or anything.

Not really, but I can come up with a scenario where it's not insanely absurd.

But the issue with the girl still remains. Someone spent HOURS AND HOURS working on this hoax for absolutely no reason. She didn't even TRY to embarass him or get money from him, she killed herself off!

All these questions are pretty easily answered from the "hoax happened and he ran with it in his mind" perspective - the bolded especially is one reason why I find it hard to believe he made up the hoax. Why is the most popular football player at Notre Dame evilly concocting this entire story over many years, publicly attaching himself to her, and depriving himself of college women? There are a lot of reasons why maybe, but it makes it more likely to me that it was real in his own mind, even if he was all too happy to ham it up in the interviews.

What will be really hilarious is Te'o will probably make the right choice to admit he's gay and then when he's drafted in the 4th round correctly there will be a huge controversy that he dropped from a top 5 pick to the 4th round because he was gay and the NFL is homophobic. The fact that he's a not especially athletic middle linebacker who was exposed as being unable to tackle or cover will hardly be mentioned.

the length/timeline is definitely crazy from all perspectives. a hoax doesn't have that patience from either side. it started way too early and didn't progress quickly enough for manti. it's probably the strongest piece of evidence for gay because at least then there's a reason to have it statically in place for a while with nothing happening.
