Opinion piece from The Athletic that ably summarizes the most recent series of EPIC FAIL moves by MSU.

Which is what allegedly happened here, according to a lawsuit filed Monday, whose pages lay out the story of an MSU student who said she was raped by three Michigan State basketball players, was told to ignore it by counselors, stayed quiet, struggled to stay in school, dropped out, tried to reorient herself, got back into school, and ultimately decided she could no longer bear the pain.

(continuing the endless rhetoric...) it goes w/o saying that is is pretty difficult to survive adolescence/college in one piece. to think even a FRACTION of the allegations against msu are true...they would deserve some kind of thorough death. and yet, here we are, watching leaders fiddle their thumbs, while the storm slowly passes and those affected are quietly paid off a smaller figure than they are owed.

Sparty spending at least $500 million to settle all lawsuits, over 4.5x what PSU paid.

Seemed like I read something that suggests $1.3 million/victim and that number was about half of what Pedo State victims got. Too lazy to verify though.

I wonder how much of that is going to come from the insurance companies.

Hopefully zero or a very minimal amount from the insurance companies. I can't imagine their coverage cap is anywhere close to that total or that the insurance companies won't fight and hopefully win to avoid paying anything. MSU's actions go far beyond what should be a covered liability. I'm hoping for criminal charges and personal civil liability for university executives. The university may be done but the executives in charge at the time need to be financially ruined and perhaps go to prison so I hope they're up next.

Found this mentioned in one article.

Quote:
MSU's general liability insurance policy with United Educators has a $39 million annual cap on liability payments connected to sexual molestation, according to a copy of the policy provided by the university.
Hopefully the insurance company will laugh, refuse to pay, and win in court to avoid paying so handily the judge awards them legal fees and penalizes MSU further for wasting the court's time.

I think your hope will go unfulfilled. Everything about MSU's lawsuit-related conduct over the last few months seems like it's being directed by the insurance companies and their lawyers. They called the insurers early in the process and it would be fairly difficult to deny coverage at this stage. It's possible that I'm wrong, but I doubt it.

Same for your hopes of criminal prosecution. Stamper isn't really in trouble because of Nassar, it's because he himself is a scumbag. Nobody else, not even Kathie Klages (which I'm probably spelling wrong), is a slam dunk indictment let along conviction.

There's a starry night of legal issues involved. One that glows brightly is that Nassar was acting as an employee of MSU whereas Sandusky was outside his scope. But I suspect the sun rose upon "how fast can we get this out of the national media?"

In today's LOL SPARTY news, interim president Engler has done such a fabulous job that 120+ Nassar victims signed a letter demanding that he resign.

IMO while I agree with the sentiment that's the wrong way to go about it. Engler will never quit, he has no future in anything so he doesn't give a damn what anyone thinks. So turn up the heat on the Trustees to force him out now (2 have already come out in support) or to get their **** together and hire a new president.

More inside baseball from Sparty today.

In February interim president John Engler named insider Bill Beekman as interim AD. he former governor said in a release at the time that the university would conduct a nationwide search and “that no internal candidates will be considered in the search process.”

Today, Beekman got the job permanently. No national search, nobody interviewed, no outsiders considered.

Prosecutors say that Todd Moyer, who was a strength and conditioning coach for the MSU men’s basketball team, was texting with friends and Googling for strip clubs when he plowed his car into another in July 2017, killing a woman and her 5-year-old daughter.

Moyer was convicted last month in Monroe County on two counts of reckless driving, and his sentencing will be Thursday. Prosecutors are asking for the maximum guidelines, about 15 years in prison. Moyer’s defense has requested a sentence without any prison time.

Quote:
In July 2017, Moyer’s pickup collided at 78 mph on southbound U.S. 23 with a vehicle driven by Gladys Jonson, 36, and her daughter, Za’Kira, in a construction zone marked by a rumble strip and eight orange warning signs. Prosecutors said Moyer did not try to evade or brake and drove at a constant 78 mph for at least five seconds before the crash.

In the five minutes before, according to a press release, Moyer conducted one Google search for strip clubs in Delaware, Ohio, and texted a link one minute before crashing. He also received and read eight texts and sent four others. Moyer’s only unread message occurred at the same time he collided.

After the impact, according to prosecutors, Moyer texted: “Omg, I’m ****ed. Two ppl killed,” “Bro. I swear,” “I’m going to jail.”
As part of his plea for more lenient sentencing, Moyer’s defense cited statements from Izzo and several former players about Moyer’s character, and claimed that he is working with Izzo on a PSA about distracted driving.
nah, you were right the first time, bro
