On a number of the swings that I've seen, these kids are effectively just making contact with the ball. None of them generate any power with their swings (well, 12-year olds don't generate much power to begin with), in fact, it doesn't look like many of them even generate a solid follow through after they've made contact with the ball.

It appears as though some of them even are just checking their swing on these balls, which is expected, they're only 12 years old. But even by just checking their swings, the bats these kids are using have so much pop in them that they're able to clear the outfield fence with ease.

I bet each of these teams was given (or purchased) at least a half-dozen brand new bats for this tournament at a minimum of $500 a pop. Ridiculous, imo.
Easton and Demarini give all of the kids in the LLWS free bats. The Easton bats are about $199 and the Demarini is around $249. The bats have a lot of pop, but the main reason for the home runs is that they play on a little field and the pitcher is throwing hard from a short distance.

Did you know you could bet on these games? Need to bribe one of these kids with a bag of candy. If they start randomly throwing balls away and such people will think nothing of it.

What's more degen, betting on the LLWS or the NFL Pre-season?

$250 Limits on 5Dimes, and LLWS by far. Told my friend about it, and he scoffed at me for even knowing it exists.

My initial thought was that it would be the LLWS. because they're twelve, but on the other hand, at least they are actually trying to win, unlike NFL Pre.

<3 this Hawaii starting pitcher. that was a serious stare down on that GIDP as he walked back to his dugout.

One thing these pitching restrictions accomplish is that they put a serious premium upon having a deep pitching staff.

I've only watched Canada's three games, but their rotation looked absolutely paper thin beyond their ace. Once Soper threw his CG against Panama to open the tournament, he wasn't eligible to come back for something like four calendar days. Hirakawa-Kao looked like a decent innings eater, but certainly not someone I would consider a solid #2 starter. The rest of the Canadians were topping out at ~60 mph, meanwhile the stud that Panama threw in the rematch was hitting 70mph and looked dominating.

I guess it also really gives a serious advantage to teams who go through the winners bracket. Not only do you not have to throw six innings the very next day, but you also get the important day off to let your top pitchers become eligible again.

The new format of the tournament is another interesting issue. Most of you are American, so don't get offended, but why is one half of the draw exclusively USA? Is there some sort of historical significance here?

It assures that one, and exactly one team from USA is in the final, and I don't think that's quite right. The two best teams could both be American, or the two best teams could be on the international side of the draw. Yet with this format, we'll never know.

Why don't they produce some sort of pre-tournament random seeding? Wouldn't a large 16-team double-elim work (as opposed to the four seperate double-elims) as this effectively ensures that the cream rises to the top, regardless of what country the top teams are from?

cobra,

how would they go about crowning a national champ if they mixed the teams up?

Do they need to? Wouldn't it be pretty clear which American goes the deepest into the tournament?

It's because it's an American-run organization, America has by far the most teams participating, and because the American games get huge TV ratings compared to games with international teams (I'm assuming here)

It's not new. AFAIK there's always been the 'US Championship' and the 'International Championship' and the winners of each play for the 'World Championship'.

Probably makes for better marketing as well. You have no international viewers if 2 US teams make a final, and you have very few US viewers if Curacao plays Taipei in the final.

AFAIK they do it as a courtesy to the international teams. something like 90% of all the little leagues in the world are in the US (made up number but I'm pretty sure it's at least somewhat near the truth). If it were representational then there would be many more USA teams than international teams in the tourney

Spoiler:
this is speculation but I think it's correct meaning i heard it from somebody somewhere that time

International Final into extras, 2-2 after 6. Both teams really good fielding and pitching, quite good hitting.

Musberger said something about Hawaii's team being forced out? What was that about?

Or maybe it was Taiwan's pitcher named Hwang who's near max count. My bad.

It's about $$ bottom line. The Disney/ABC rights to this tournament will take a hit if the USA doesn't have a guaranteed team in the final.
