I think that most of the time this is probably the correct strategy. Never seen any coach do it though (not surprisingly).

Kicking the FG is fine. Forcing the opponent to score a TD instead of scoring an FG to bring to OT is worth a lot.

Ah, but, you force the other coach to play for a win instead of shoehorning him into thinking I must get it to my kicker's career long

But up 3, you almost never lose in regulation, so even the times you fail to convert you win 50% of the time. Up 6, you lose in regulation far more often, although you perhaps win in regulation more often as well.

Kicking the field goal also gives up 15+ yards of field position though even if you don't convert. Instead of giving the opponent the ball on average on like the 25 you're giving it to them inside their own 5. And that's only if you don't get in. Also the opponent is more likely to score a TD down 6 than down 3 anyway cause they won't kick a field goal. Going up 2 scores>>>>than up 6 and they have the ball on the 23>up 3 and they have the ball on their own 5. The fact that coaches are so bad at trying to get into real field goal range/going for the win down 3 makes going for it even better than it would be in a vacuum, too.
This is obviously talking about being inside the 7 or so. I think its still a go for it way more than would be expected points optimal but at the goal line I don't see how kicking isn't grossly incorrect.

I don't understand. This happens every few weeks. Team ahead has the ball in the closing 2 minutes. Other team has no timeouts. All they have to do is run out the clock.

The Bears had it real easy here. Instead of allowing 3 chances to fumble the ball and eventually have to punt it away all they had to do was rack up -50 yards in rushing yards across 3 running plays. Almost no chance of fumbling and better chances to run off more time per play with the defense in front of you and you running away from them.

The worst case scenario is that they have to take the safety and kick the free kick out of bounds and someone hurts his career stats line.

The variable of players doing something they normally dont do has to count for something. I have 1 Bengals Titans 2:12 Titans out of Timeouts Bengals up 4 3rd and 8 Titans 21. They run. Shouldnt they have threw to try and seal the game.

Yes definitely throw there

The 3rd down play, plus the 4th down field goal is gonna eat up the clock regardless

God the coaches are all so freakin bad .... Tough to watch sometimes

Dabo and Jim Grobe are trying to out tard each other with their end of game clock management. Clemson lined up for a go ahead field goal with 1:30 to go and the clock running. Wake Forest failed to use one of their 3 timeouts. The clock was stopped due to a measurement, but when it restarted, Clemson took five seconds off the clock before kicking, giving an extra ~20 seconds for Wakes game tying drive. They ended up missing the chip shot anyways, but god, these coaches are the worst

W Kentucky has 4th and 5 at lsu 32 tied 7-7. They try 49y fg, bad enough bc they aren't going to win straight up. Much worse when you know the obvvvv miss dropped them to 4/16 on season on fgs

Notre Dame just called timeout after a completed pass to set up 3rd and goal from the 7 with 55 seconds left in half-- Seriously, are you trying to give maryland a possession before the half? Run it down to 20 and call timeout. They still have another one so 0% chance of running out of time. Horrendous. Then they take another TO with 34 seconds left on the 1. This is actually correct because if you don't get in you force maryland to run a play and your equity of getting a safety if you don't get in>everything else. Really maryland should have started calling timeouts as soon as it was 1st and goal with 1:30 left. (Actually arguably not before 1st down since less time comes off clock in college but still.

Oregon just kicked an extra point to go up 20, rather than trying to go up by 3 scores. Not a huge error obv, but still.

Chip Kelly has been pretty elite otherwise, so we'll forgive him.

In this case it was important for Brian Kelly to remind his team to secure the ball so we don't have our 3RD fumble returned 99 yards the other way.

Also, you don't want to run the clock down and then get a pass interference penalty but be unable to take advantage of it. Lol Maryland offense anyways, what are they going to do with 30 seconds to go in the half?

Coach Shaw, notice what Chip Kelly did on 4th and 7 from the 30? He went for it and scored a touchdown. You brought out the backup kicker who had missed a ****ing extra point already (and another the week before) to kick a 50 yard field goal.

Also nice wildcat call on 3rd and 8 from the 20 in the USC game. Heisman candidate QB but wait let's take the ball out of his hands and just tell the defense that we're gonna run. Jesus.

Not even sure this is wrong. Would depend what point it is in the game. If there's plenty of time left, them scoring two FGs and two TDs seems a more likely scenario than three straight TDs. Particularly given the tendency of coaches to sendoutthekickingteam.jpg
