The point is: the old cowboys are the same as the new cowboys

Maybe I'm reckless
If you go 4th and 3 there is a good chance you will be down 10 with 1 possession remaining, basically game over.

If you kick FG (assume 96% make) worst case you are down 7 with 1 possession remaining. Which really is not that bad because you play all 4 downs and play calling is closer to optimal even in Fat Mike's case. If you are down 3 then you might actually be the favorite to win if you can somehow end regulation with a score.

I think you may have seen what you expected to see in the GDT rather than what was actually written. I just went back and looked and these are all the comments I see that were remotely related to that series. I may have missed some though.

edit: Godgers has to be furious to see him going for it on 4th & 3 there.

Just to clarify my post at the top of this list was obviously shock at him going for it--not criticism of the decision.

There were a couple of posts talking about how fat mike coaching a team that they always cheer against is heavenly. I was assuming they were referring to the 4th down call because I’m not sure what other mistakes he made. I guesss they could have just been talking in general.

And I was drinking during the game and didn’t check the thread until after so it’s also possible that i wrongly assumed everyone was bagging on the 4th down call.

Yep, I was one of those saying he was glad to see him coaching the 'Boys. Gase or maybe a couple of others would have been preferable imo, but you can't have everything. And that was a general remark.

Jason Butt @JasonHButt

Raheem Morris took responsibility for the defensive game-plan against the Seahawks. He said he went in wanting to stop Chris Carson and the run and didn't take the passing attack as seriously as he should have. Said he didn't do a good job having his guys disguise well enough.

raheem morris, welcome to the thread

I dont think there is a gameplan where the falcons defense stops the seahawks.

going for it was clearly correct and doesn't seem particularly close in fact as insane as it sounds I actually think fat mike made better in game decisions than mcvay did.

I think its perfectly fine to laugh at the individual play call, and not the decision to go for it as opposed to kicking.

Hmm I still think the "clearly correct" crowd needs to show their work, I'm not saying it's wrong but it's not remotely a slam dunk. The 3rd/4th down play calls were definitely awful as a whole, but I feel once you've gone with that 3rd down run and wound up with 4th & 3 it's a super meh spot to go for it.

Make it <2 yards to go, or make it goal to go from the 3 and I think it becomes a very easy spot to go. As it stands you have the odds of not converting, parlayed with the chance of converting, killing more clock and then having to kick a FG anyway (with the Rams now more easily able to go on a leisurely FG drive to end the game).

FAT MIKE's FATNESS warped space-time and made the failcons forget to fall on the onside kick

Adam Gase, down 24-3 late in the third quarter, said he was just looking for points and "some positive juice" when he settled for a FG. Why not go for it? "There's not a ton of great plays on fourth-and-7 when you're playing that defense," he said.
hmm

Did his best to counter by going 2 yards in 1:30 and settling for a 46-yarder to win it though.

Fat Mike went for 2 down 9 with 5 minutes to go. This is so refreshingly correct I assume Fat Mike was looking for a sandwich and delegated that decision.

Yeah it's obviously not a slam dunk. As you noted it seems most people assume that converting on 4th assures a TD, which it obviously doesn't. I got it 20% chance of TD, which really is not that good as the game had not reached that level of desperation.

The way I see it, it basically depends on expectation of DAL getting the ball again only once, or twice. If they get the ball only once, then FG is correct. If they get the ball twice, then it is less clear but going for it may be correct.

Quote from article on ATL strategy regarding onside kick:

Quote:
The Falcons were prepared for a high, pop-up kick and had wide receiver Julio Jones on the second line to go get it.

They didn’t know what to do with the slow roller.
Incredible.

I mean I get the thought in the moment, nobody wants to be the moron who tries to pick the thing up when they don't have to and have it squirt right out, so the next step is just let it hopefully stop before it goes 10yd. But then once it goes, like, 7, it's time to fall on the stupid thing.

You can bat a ball out of bounds, but not kick it right? Batting it backwards would be dangerous obv but somebody needed to bite the bullet and jump on it as GMAN said at 7 or 8 yards

It will be amazing if fat Mike goes from HoF bonehead MVP of this thread to guy who actually makes good decisions. I haven't watched any cowboys games, is this a trend this year or did he screw up and accidentally make the right call?

Could Fat Mike be the new Ron Rivera?

I'm old enough to remember when Andy Reid was the old Ron Rivera - like 2 years ago.
