- LAC onside kick with 1:28 left and 3 timeouts, down 7. Think the kicking team is close to 0% on successful onside kicks when the opposition knows it’s coming since the latest rule changes. IMO, the onside kick is a “don’t break out, unless there’s no other way to get the ball back” option now. Especially considering how conservative Tomlin was coaching, kick it deep and get that extra 30 yards in field position if you hold on d, especially considering there will only be ~1 min left and no timeouts.
- I think Pitt punting on 4th and 1 from LAC’s 36 with 1:11 left deserves to be here as well. Obviously it worked out really well for Pitt since they pinned the chargers on the 1, but that could’ve just as easily turned into a touchback.
Very curious about onside numbers. 6% or so compared to kicking deep getting 3 and out then % chance of scoring with no timeouts from average punt field position. Compared to the 94% of the time you need to have them go 3 and out then average punt from midfield.
Honestly the silly pooch kick onside might be the best option with no actual good option.
Onside ruled needs changed
Don't forget the doinked fg down 24
