How can we discuss #2 coach without discussing #2 in RANGZ in the 2p2 era?

Also disagree w/your theory that ppl say coach is dope when his team wins. Tomlin, Fat Mike, Quinn, Rivera all easy counter examples
less discerning fans than us think those are all great coaches

i had to quit the panthers subreddit because they actually loved gettleman too!

John Fox admitted they did talk about letting the 9ers score but felt good about his block unit on a 24 yd attempt. Yes, you're really likely to block a sub XP rather than driving for a TD yourself with a minute left.

Also the opposing kicker got cut for no ****ing reason other than $, so he was pretty pumped to nail that FG and celebrate right at everyone in chicago.

These "we had confidence in our guys" excuses are always terrible but claiming that they thought the block unit would save them might just take the cake.

Oh for sure if there's a way to blame the players while making it simultaneously sound like you're praising them, that's the way to go as a coach.

The baseball equivalent is the manager just putting/leaving his closer in when there's an awful matchup, but he knows he'll be crucified if the other guy he brings in gets hit...so instead you let your closer fail, then in the press conference you can talk about how you have nothing but faith in him and that's what he gets paid for blah blah. Totally his fault, never yours.

John Fox vs everyone telling him they should've let the 9ers score a touchdown at the end there.

Because we live in a world of the lazy and why bother proving fox wrong--the article didn't actually show one, just pointed out where teams gave it up and it added win probability even though they still lost in the end.

Last year Chiefs down by 1, Smiff threw a pick 6 at Denver. If the defender had dropped to the ground on the 1 - it's pretty much game over. Listening at the time I was hoping he'd score.

And of course the Chiefs came back and won the game.

Saints obviously just run a qb sneak and get a 1st down but brees throws the game away anyway with an INT a play or two later.

do you think it's a bad decision if NO is 100% to kick the FG?

Almost definitely not, since there was just under 2:00 left and ATL had all 3 TOs, should have been ezpz to get into FG range and win. If the game were against Fat Mike or something I think you snap decline the penalty.

Also, against a coach that's doing this, accepting the penalty doesn't even matter much, since likely they're just gonna run on 3rd down for a shorter attempt.

I'm fine with the declining of the penalty.

NFL coaches are generally idiots and most would probably kick in that spot. Even guys like Bellichick who seem to understand things better do stupid stuff like that all the time.

Would anyone really have been that surprised if Payton just kicked on the 4th and 1?

Let's call the conversion rate there 80%. Conversion from 10.5 yards is like 30%. You're giving Payton a better chance of a new set of downs if he goes for it as little as 40% of the time, so while I wouldn't have been shocked if he kicked, I don't think he kicks enough to make it worth it. Not to mention that trying to convert 3rd and 10 from the 30 has a substantially higher chance of a turnover, and that the FG is not a gimme from there (and there's a chance of getting pushed back further). Don't think it's close.
