For a long stretch the consensus on SE was 1. Belichick 2. Payton.

Should be easy to find with a search if you are really interested.

He used to/does let Brees throw the ball 50 times a game which led to lots of points.

Playing 5 on 3 would have been a good time to deploy a cherry picker.

#2 has also in recent times been

- Chudzinski (since fired)
- Chip Kelly (since fired twice)
- Harbaugh (since "mutually departed")
- They aforementioned Payton
- Carroll (since then tried to get his MVP level QB completely murdered by spending about tree fiddy on the entire offensive line as a running team)
- Arians (since then has changed since his team has run slightly less pure with injuries obviously)

Others who have had stints in the top 5

- Bowles
- Andy Ried (until his offences stop working, he is a top coach when they do tho)
- Tomlin
- John Harbaugh
- 99% sure Mike Smith was in there years ago
- Pretty sure McAdoo was as well for his exciting offence, until #13 got injured and running every play out of 11 personal got found out

--------------------

Basically, when your team is winning your a dope coach, and then when they aren't you suck.

Likewise the positions of 2-5 will probably be filled with some combination of McVay, Pedersen, Shanahan, etc.... until two years time where either there results regress to the mean, or they cop injuries, or run bad in close games. Much in the same way when you read the young QB thread and every four weeks or so the order of

Winston, Mariota, Goff, Wentz, Prescott changes from week to week.

--------------------------------------------

Also, I am absolutely shocked that the end game of Jacksonville vs Arizona has not yet been talked about here. Its easily the worst play calling of the year in my opinion. The combination of the first two plays is about as good a combination as nuts and gum...

Arizona punt from around about midfield with 1.14 left. Jags have the ball pinned at their 10. Arizona have one time out so can't stop the clock if the Jags wanna take it to overtime

Quote:
1-10-JAX 10
(1:14) (Shotgun) 24-T.Yeldon up the middle to JAX 12 for 2 yards (92-F.Rucker)
.
Both teams let the clock run. Sweet, overtime it is.

OH WHAT THE **** ARE YOU DOING DOUG MORON. YOU ****ING BRAIN DEAD ******.

Better hope you can get something now

Timeout #3 by ARI at 00:27
.

Oh ****.... But its ok, its only Blaine Gabbert we have to worry about

Quote:
4-3-JAX 17
(:27) 3-B.Nortman punts 56 yards to ARI 27, Center-49-C.Holba. 21-P.Peterson pushed ob at ARI 39 for 12 yards (26-J.Wilson).
Arizona Cardinals at 00:16
1-10-ARI 39
(:16) (Shotgun) 7-B.Gabbert pass short left to 33-K.Williams ran ob at ARI 49 for 10 yards.
1-10-ARI 49
(:11) (Shotgun) 7-B.Gabbert pass short left to 37-D.Foster pushed ob at JAX 39 for 12 yards (44-M.Jack). The Replay Official reviewed the pass completion ruling, and the play was Upheld. The ruling on the field stands.
Well, its got to be a long field goal by one of the oldest kickers in the league.

Quote:
1-10-JAX 39
(:11) 4-P.Dawson 57 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-49-J.Drescher, Holder-2-A.Lee.
--------------------------------------------

Also got to laugh at McCarthy taking on a 56 yard FG at Heinz field (hardest place to kick in the league) and then his last sequence of plays backed up on the goal-line on their last possession (though to be fair that may partially have been on the rookie running back for going OOB). Also might be on Tomlin for not taking a TO on the sack on first down of Hundley

To add to this, basically Payton (and John Harbaugh) were the first to really go for it more on 4th and short in situations where everyone else punts. And not by fake punts either, by actually using formations designed to get one yard through various sneaks and runs etc... which are 85%+ to convert from 4th and inches.

Thanks for the explanations. To me Payton has always been the guy who hired and kept around Rob Ryan who had a decade long history of failure.

NFL is rife with nepotism. I'm guessing neither Rob nor Rex even sniff a shot if their father hadn't been Buddy. Before people got woke to the fact that he's one of the GOATs Wade Phillips was often derisively referred to as "Bum's Son". His father was the long time coach of the old Houston Oilers (plz, plz, plz Texans go back to being the Oilers in my lifetime).

And it wasn't like that happened because they hit an unbelievably bad swong of missed wide open jumpers, they were too ****ing stupid to get open jumpers. It was the most baffling thing, they'd swing it from open guy to open guy around the 3 point line while Bama played a triangle zone then they'd dribble into the zone to take a contested shot.

They also had no idea what to do on defense, they didn't try to trap or cherry pick or anything, they just had 2 guys doing nothing most possessions.

doug "moron" is either the most incompetent when it comes to clock management or he was trying to lose that game.
that sequence was un****ing real n indefensible.
**** if they had taken a deep shot on 2nd down then thrown again on 3rd I could get behind that as at least they're being aggressive and trying to win in regulation but a 4yd crossing route followed by run up the middle n punt is just mind boggling n its ****ing insane that these nearly billion dollar organizations continue to tolerate such absolute failure like it's unavoidable.

They ran on first for two yards and let half of their remaining time run off.

The first two plays combined in that state might literally be the worst combination of plays ever called in the history of the league given Arizona had exactly 1 TO

Brady got tripped by his RB and threw it with his knee on the ground with no Bills player close. Mcdermott challenged he was down by contact.

I'd have to see the math on ATL kicking a FG at 4th and 3 with 5+min and 3 TOs. It seems pretty close to me, and I'm usually right with these spots. What's the cutoff for time remaining where FG is okay is the question. I think it's about 5 minutes.

Maybe but the flow of the drive really should have forced Quinn's hand. It was a 10 play drive and they were moving the ball fairly well. He needed to ride the wave.

If the team is banking on a 3 and out they should not kick a FG and go for it instead. If you can get the ball back with enough time for a non-rushed scoring drive even if the defense can not get that 3 and out then a FG is probably fine. 5 minutes has to be the close to the minimum remaining time for that to be true.

Tomlin as a top-5 coach? Gonna need some citations that claim was ever made here.

Also disagree w/your theory that ppl say coach is dope when his team wins. Tomlin, Fat Mike, Quinn, Rivera all easy counter examples
