it was on purpose and afaik the plan was to run the whole clock out but it didn't work.

They did it on purpose. I think it's OK. Feel better about preventing a Kickoff return for TD then a few different outcomes that could lead to disaster if they punted (punt return td, blocked punt, bad punt out of bounds leaving time and not that much distance etc)

WSH leading DAL by 1 point at about the 3 minute mark.

3rd and 21 DAL at DAL 30

Ideal time to send an 8 man rush amirite.

obv the common sense is to be in coverage there, but while i don't know a ton about NFL playcalling, you prob have to rush/blitz there sometimes for game theory purposes right

No? Why would you care if they know for a fact that you're going to have heavy coverage for big plays?

I mean I could see sending some sort of blitz sometimes, but you don't ever give them an 8-man blitz look, particularly not when you've done the exact same thing the previous two plays.

Edit: I seem to be getting levelled

I had money on Washington moneyline as well, so mad.

I'm pretty sure forcing someone to throw a deep pass into heavy coverage on 3rd and 21 is a dominant strategy

i mean i'm sure that it's right to be in deep coverage generally but i am pretty averse to the idea that doing the same thing 100% of the time in a situation is correct, especially considering the fact that it's not a very polarized scenario

i was not leveling anyone i just think it is interesting

Well, obviously you can switch up your different coverages and pass rushes, but I'm pretty sure playing zero high is godawful

Especially considering the receivers could barely run routes, giving Dez the chance to make a play 1 on 1 is god awful IMO

worst coaching decision in that game by far was garrett not benching his center.

ah yeah that makes sense

various strategies are viable as long as they contain subset X or something

I didn't get why he never did. I mean, after the 3rd or the 4th early snap...

Jim Caldwell not going for 2 outside 2 minutes left in the game and instead settling to tie the game. Just because Painter drove 80 yards down the field doesn't mean it'll happen again.

Christ you had 3 timeouts. Go for 2. If you miss, Pittsburgh will play not to throw a pick and you'll get the ball back anyway.

In all fairness that's really not the coach's call. He had them going for it, the qb called time at the line, he changed his mind and punted. He didn't make any active decision to call a timeout. If you think going for it is wrong you can fault him for making that call and if you think punting is wrong you can fault him for changing. You can also fault him for things like not preparing his qb for this situation properly but can't really call him out personally for calling the timeout rather than taking the 5 yards.

I'm assuming he wasn't screaming for it on the side-line. I just saw the qb call it.

they don't know you are doing it 100% of the time.

this applies to poker too.

Was just about to ask why teams don't put really fast players instead of punters for this play. Then I found out that's what Oklahoma State did against Texas A&M last week--victory formation, snap to a WR, he runs backwards for 5 seconds to run the clock out, then runs out of the end zone to end the game.

Coaches consistently undervalue who gets the ball last, either 1st half or game. At least you avoid OT and yield some win equity if the 2 pointer hits.

I think they planned to go for it, but then realized their street receivers didn't really know where to line up or anything, and decided they couldn't stake turning the ball over on a guy lining up improperly or running the wrong route or something

After thinking about this Jim Harbaugh not taking the 15 yard penalty isnt the nuts its really stupid dont get me wrong. The nuts has to be Jim Caldwell pulling peyton manning out of a game perfectly healthy chasing a perfect season against the Jets with the lead in the 2nd half.

The best part about pulling Manning was that Caldwell used all these "Regular season records don't matter, it's all about the Super Bowl" horse**** excuses, but he admitted to leaving Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark in the game weeks 16 and 17 so that they could reach 100 catches on the season.

The dumb bastard can't even get resting his players right.

It is pretty mind blowing that the team is not that far removed from 16-0 had they tried and minus GOAT and Bob Sanders they could realistically go winless. Seriously, give Peyton the MVP this season, just ridiculous.
