To which Dilfer and Dungy will respond: "EQUITY BE DAMNED, YOU GO WITH THE PERCENTAGES AND PUNT"

It's a Rex Ryan fail, just not the reason stated. The punter, apparently, made the decision on his own to run the fake. The fail is either giving the authority to the punter to make that decision (GB vs Chicago, week 1, last year) or having a punter that doesn't listen to his coach.

That punter must have balls of steel to do that

Teams should hire relief coaches. Come the two minute warning, coaches like Chilly, Reid and McCarthy can leave the field of play, tip their hat to the crowd, and let someone with a concept of time management close out the game.

LOL, I posted on the Cards board a hypo about what do if you score a TD to make the difference in score 9 points. Over 80% of people said go for 1.

The best explanation someone came up with was that missing the two kills your momentum. Everyone else said, basically, "you just don't"

Kind of like how the Harbormaster takes over for the Captain to bring a big ship into port.

same on the OU boards after OU-Mizzou. A few said "football 101", "every pop warner coach knows this", "look what happened when we went for it"

Most compared missing it now to making it later: "would you rather be down 9 or 8?" and continually called an 8 point deficit a "one possession game" even though the numbers indicate it will take two scores more often than one to score 8 points. "YOU ALWAYS EXTEND THE GAME"

A few also used the momentum argument.

Does anyone remember any coach saying anything close to this? Like, is there some GOAT coach somewhere who made the majority of decisions as +EV and commented on it?

I can only think of BB as the closest coach to this.

Coaches say this (accurately or otherwise, consciously or otherwise) whenever they say they felt their decision gave them the best chance to win. No reason to speak in terms that won't resonate with your audience.

Pacers down two, and the Bucks get the ball with 26 seconds left. Jim O'Brien decides not to intentionally foul since 26>24. Pacers end up fouling unintentionally with about 6 seconds left, but did you really think they weren't just going to run the clock down and throw it up in the air, JOB?

That's because BB has the most job security of any head coach in the league, and thus can treat the NFL like one long-term poker game. He can stockpile draft picks knowing he'll be coaching them years from now, and can make on-field decisions that, if they failed, could subject a lot of coaches to major scrutiny. I imagine a lot of NFL coaches, when it comes to the finer tactical matters like clock management and punt vs going for it decision-making, play scared for their jobs. Many of them are playing with a lot smaller bankroll than him.

Honestly, I like the fake punt. IMO, fake punts are often done best when they are least expected and how unexpected could you get 4th and 20 from your own 20 in the 1st quarter (or some **** like that).

This also wasn't the first time this was done

Ron Zook just punted on 4th-and-1 from inside the 50 in a game that was 31-31 coming out of halftime.

Ron Zook just kicked a 39 yard FG on 4th and 1 in a 31-31 game. (Miss obv).

Ron Zook was an idiot all day long, punting/kicking three times on 4th and 1 or less, once wasting a timeout to decide to go try and draw them offsides before punting. All three attempts were either near midfield or well past midfield too. If coaches aren't going to go for it on days when neither team can get a stop, when will they?

Well, I think it's been well-established for about a decade now that Ron Zook is an idiot, so let's not rush to lump everyone in with him.
