I don't know anything about football but...

I wonder if coaches, faced with a finite amount of preparation and practice time, prioritize things that are factors for a larger percentage of the game. I mean, once the season is rolling you only have a week to watch tape, game plan, work out the players to the plan, etc. Coaches may feel they get more EV bang for their practice/planning dollar by working on things like football fundamentals, "schemes", and opponent-specific stuff than the stuff that comes up in the 2-minute drill situations.

Of course, even if that's true, we could argue with their priorities and say that they should give more weight to 2-minute drills, clock management, set play packages for situations, etc.

But then, a rejoinder to that might be, "If we do well on the first part (general game planning and execution) we won't need to worry about the second part, because it won't be close."

I dunno, thoughts?

The problem is that these are all repeatable events. You dont need to rehearse or practice them every week. Nothing changes. Sure, very close decisions might hinge on exactly how good your offense is versus their defense, but even those are extremely simple adjustments that basically come down to "good D" or "bad offense" and these arent even the mistakes they are making. They are punting in spots where it would be wrong if they were a high school team facing the Broncos.

So labron rolls his ankle on Monday in a game that doesn't matter against a bad team late in the third with a big lead

Keep him in as normal for rest of the game and now he's iffy for one of the 3 games that matter all reg season on Wednesday

He could also be smart and have it pre planned with the doctors to lie to him or whatever's necessary

Same thing happened a year or two ago, but just more extreme

Up 30 points and end of 3rd against Phoenix lebron rolls ankle, stays in game till like 3 min left in 4th then sits next game with hurt ankle

Guy is careless, I know lebron is a man beast, but protect him, there's only so much tread

Coming out of a lengthy review that overturned a fumble, Wazzu snapped the ball with 20 seconds remaining on the play clock with a running game clock on 2nd & 10 with 2 minutes remaining up 8. Wazzu ended up fumbling on the play

Wazz used their last timeout prior to the 2-point try with 31 seconds left up 2. Not like they need it if Colorado st tied the game. They did, but they didn't. Wazzu fumbled the ensuing kickoff. gg

This is the set up for my coaching fantasy : Initially, the coach decides to kick it. That might be right depending on how bad their goal line offense is. The kick is good and there is a penalty. In a giant **** you to all the traditionalists, the coach takes the penalty and takes the points off the board, and then goes for it from the one.

The try for two fails, but after the game the owner announces that he understands that it was the correct call, and extends the coach's contract.

In a hundred years, this may happen.
