So does Belichick automatically get the benefit of the doubt going for it on 4th and inches on his own 27 yard line up 16-10? It worked so it isn't an issue and he's Bill Belichick so anything he decides is correct, right?

You should pretty much always go for it on 4th and inches unless there is a clock issue.

According to this chart, which uses simulations and backwards induction, the Patriots should have gone for it if they have a 60% chance of getting it. I think fourth and inches is well over that.

Just a gutless team, they should fire him and make Bobby April the interim coach since special teams is about the only thing they're good at.
It'll never happen. Wilson is all about keeping costs down to make money. As my friend put it, "He has a monopoly in a small market, he gets paid the same whether the Bills win 3 games or 10". If that means hiring retread coaches on the cheap who don't have the guts to make decisions to try to win games, then so be it.

Jim Mora Jr. throwing his field goal kicker under the bus for going 4 for 6 in a 25-19 loss to the Bears.

Hey Jim, how about the fact your offense had to settle for 6 field goals in the first place? How about some blame for Seneca Wallace, who could have conceivably thrown around 9 picks if the Bears secondary had hands? Or Greg Knapp, your buddy from your Atlanta days when you both underachieved before you were run out of town?

Hey, you could tell everyone you'd like the Washington Huskies head coaching job again, right? At least your Dad has the best post-game rant ever!

Notre Dame looks completely panicky and indicates they are going to line up quickly and spike the ball (which itself is royally stupid but that's what they are gonna do).

Purdue then CALLS A TIMEOUT?!?!?!

I would really like to see an interview with the coach where he explains why....

Purdue should have been calling a timeout the whole time. The more I think about it the more Weis is probably just doing some lying saying he was going to spike it so he can still run some dumb fake spike through the legs jump pass with Clausen at a later point in the year that he came up with on an Old Country Buffet napkin or something.

I like the timeout. It's not like ND isn't gonna get two plays off in 36 seconds. If Weis spikes he's an idiot.

Purdue the timeout to have a better chance of stopping them scoring and to keep time on the clock in case they need to score.

Bengals get a first down on the PIT 20 w/ 45 seconds left and 2 timeouts. They spike the ball.

The announcers made a big deal about that, but I don't think it was stupid at all. ND had plenty of time to run two plays. The D was out of sorts as well and ND could have easily caught the D off guard for a quick score. Like you said, they signaled for a spike but who knows if that wasn't just a Manningese trick (seems like something Weiss/Claussen would do) and besides it would be incredibly stupid and you can't gameplan for stupidity. If they were in fact going to spike it, it sucks that they stopped them from doing it but can't fault the Purdue coach in that spot imo.

I'm thinking it went something like this...

Garrett: "We've been running the ball well all day and Carolina's D-Line hasn't had much of an answer. It's second and goal from the one yard line, why don't we have LOLRomo throw a fade?

Wade: Whatever you say, boss. I love twinkies. Rats, it didn't work.

Garrett: Damn! I thought that would work! Well, everyone knows we're running all over the Panthers just like we ran all over the Giants last week, they haven't been able to stop us yet and they obviously can't stop us now. Which means they (and everyone else) are expecting us to run! You know what they won't expect? Another fade! But not to a WR, to Martellus Bennet.

Wade: Who?

Garrett: ****, it didn't work again. Wanna go for it on fourth down to make it a two score game, we could try another fade?

Wade: **** it, let's just kick the field goal. Pretty soon Jake is going to throw a DeLOLhomme pick six anyway, so we'll be up two scores either way.

If ND wasn't going to spike it, it's not a big deal at all, they are going to get two plays regardless.

However if ND was going to spike it (which would have been stupid of them) it was very stupid.

I am 90% sure that they were going to spike it, they were quickly lining up and he was doing the spike motion, the odds of them that quickly formulating a "let's pretend spike it to fake them" is slim.

UConn-Pitt is tied at 21 with 2:18 to go, first and goal Pitt ball on the 4 yard line, UConn is out of timeouts. Rather than just let Pitt score with 2:10 left on the clock, UConn goes balls out and stuffs them three times to make sure that Pitt just kicks the 18 yard field goal as time expires for the win. Just infuriating on both ends, UConn let them score, Pitt just take knees for three plays so that they can't let you score before you kick the 95% field goal on fourth down.

Todays ASU-UW game: UW receives a punt with 1:15 left on their own 15, tie game, all 3 timeouts remaining, ASU had either 1 or 0 timeouts. They run the ball on 1st down and gain like 4 yards. Rather than call a time out, they run a sort-of hurry up which burns ~ 25 seconds, then run another run play which is stopped short of the first down. With the clock still running, they run the hurry up again, burning another 20 seconds, and throw a bomb which falls incomplete so now they have to punt. ASU gets the ball back at midfield with 13 seconds left, and on the next play UW runs some defense which allows Chris McGaha (and another receiver was wide open for that matter) to run all alone down the middle of the field for an easy touchdown.

Normally this thread is reserved for things like clock management and fourth down decisions, but whatever play was called in that game is by far the worst coaching move of the year, how can you let two guys run wide open on what was effectively a hail mary. Just astounding.

It was as though the Huskies were expecting Erickson to call a draw and head to OT...

Maybe the Huskies coaches were already working on their playcall script for OT? Rather than watching those last 13 seconds?

Talk about not paying attention. I'm glad I didn't have money on the game!
