Well it wouldn't be the first time commentators said something wrong. Especially with weird rules (tuck rule comments come to mind).

Just weird that both Dominic and I clearly remember it coming up a few years ago and they clarifying that two feet in the end zone was sufficient.

All along I said I might be wrong, so I'm not really interested in arguing it. Just hilarious that 4th film picked an ambigious situation like this to be sarcastic to someone about lack of knowledge.

edit: If you read the late games thread I started it by saying I didn't even know what the rule was (despite feeling I know the NFL very very well).. but I just recalled the clarification from a few years ago.

They may very well be right.

Did they say the tuck rule was the incorrect rule like 30+ minutes after the game? (I can't remember).

Well, it was a long time ago but I'm pretty sure national media was questioning if it was the right call throughout that week. Certainly the next day.

I think it makes sense since the player is in the end zone. I feel its a lot like dragging the feet out the back end of the end zone and the ball never being actually in the end zone while possessed.
i actually considered this but the ball still crosses the gl in those situations. now, i can certainly see the nfl having some stupid rule but it still wont make sense.

I thought they questioned if it should be an actual rule, not if the ruling on the field was actually correct?

TNM,

This is in the 2006 rulebook:

"SUPPLEMENTAL NOTES
(1) The ball is automatically dead at the instant of legal player possession on, above,
or behind the opponents’ goal line."

That seems to mean that as soon as he was in the end zone the ball is dead and therefore a TD, right? That was right under the thing you quoted.

I'm not debating it here, this thread has nothing to do with it.

I think there was still some debate.

IIRC it had to do with Brady's other hand touching the ball and making some people believe that the rule shouldn't apply. I don't actually know how it should have been.

Once again I want to bitch that the NFL doesn't have the official rules on their website. **** comes up probably once a season that 99% of fans don't know about or at least aren't sure. Every game it seems like the announcers have a conversation where one or both of them aren't sure of a rule. I know I'm nerdy, but I quite frequently want to reference the official rules. You can find it by googling but it's I think an old version. The NHL, NBA and MLB all have the full official rules on their sites.

Don't think this has been mentioned yet: SF gets a 1st down around the miami 21 with 1:20 to go and they spiked the ball to stop the clock.

Sacrificing a down there seemed like an awful move at the time, no?

They all do it. It's stupid. Turns out these highly paid players can't lineup and have one or two receivers run a sideline pattern. The quarterback can just throw the ball out of bounds unless someone gets free. But that's too tough a play for the pros.

This was just shocking. Fischer usually owns at coaching, especially the close games. But this was mind-blowing. I was saying all game that the Texans would lose and it would come down to Fischer outcoaching Kubiak. I was wrong. Fischer out-******ed Kubiak today, and it may have cost him his best defensive player in Haynesworth.

More lol was his explanation after the game "It was 5 yards out of his range...he was kicking that far out before the game and wasn't coming close."

WTF!? Really? This is complete bullsh*t, Jeff. I'm a Texans fan, and this explanation pisses me off. That is piss-poor to not own up to it.

Was there a significant wind? I see that Bironas kicked one that long the previous quarter, obv the other side of the field.

The retractable roof was down from hurricane Ike damage, but c'mon.
