Bob Stoops down 14 with 7 minutes left, gets a touchdown and kicks the PAT.

Down 7 with 1:25 left, gets the touchdown and now gets the brilliant idea to go for 2. Although he ends up kicking the PAT after getting a penalty.

Wouldn't it be quicker to make a thread for when college coaches actually make smart late game decisions?

Oregon's Chip Kelley leaving 2 timeouts while his kicker trying to kick a borderline fg as time expires.

I know this thread is for bad decisions, but Kudos to Cal for going for 2 down 28-19 with 10:53 to go in the 4th quarter to cut it to 28-21 instead of the "lets keep it 2 scores and kick the XP". Yes, i know some have ran the EV WP math and the gain is minimal, but the gain in information of how to play the rest of the game is not accounted for in that.

The Cal clock management on their last drive was obviously stupid.

Dueling obviously stupid coaching decisions in the Baylor-Oklahoma game:

First the Baylor coach (his name eludes me) gets the ball back on his 20 with the game tied and 0:51 remaining holding a timeout while Okla has two TOs. Baylor has the #2 offense in football, and their quarterback is either a vampire or a cyborg (has 5 interceptions in 300 attempts). It was said Baylor's kicker is actually quite good and has a 50 yard range. The coach decides to "play it safe" and handoff straight up the middle and get the game to overtime. That's pretty stupid.

Second the Oklahoma coach (Stoop) decides he's going to use his timeouts after that run up the middle to try to get the ball back with time for a hail mary or something. Consequently, Baylor decides they have to run some actual plays and march right down the field and score a touchdown to win.

Hey, Stoop; When your opponent makes a giant screw up by not going for your throat, you don't tilt you head way back and lean over and yell, "DOOOOOOOOO IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIITTTTTTTTTTT!!!!"

The QB rolled out left and threw a pass to a very wide open receiver behind the last Nebraska defender that went for a huge gain, resulting in a win.

I had forgotten that Brent Musburger even says "no question what's about to happen" before the play, which I take to mean a run up the middle. Everyone in the stadium knows that you don't do anything other than run up the middle. Right?

There's gotta be some game-theoretic value in instilling the thought in your opponents that you are capable of a pass on 4th and short, increasing your success rate on the times that you run.

On 4th and inches, pure QB sneak strategy is still probably what I would do in practice based on available information. For 4th and short but not inches, I'd have to look a little deeper into it to develop my strategy.
Was that in a King of the Hill episode?

+1 but imo Baylor's coach's decision was worse than stoops. THE GAME IS 38 to 38!!! obv you are scoring some points and can move the ball.

He also used his timeouts horrendously during OK's last drive.

As bad as pro coaches are college coaches are way worse. It makes me wonder how bad high school coaches are. Bill Walsh was great game manager most of the time Sean Payton is pretty solid. Caldwell is the worst ive seen. Every decision at the end of the game is bad one its seems impossible to make as many stupid decisions as Caldwell. Marvin Lewis proves you can improve he was atrocious in previous seasons.

Holliday,
Baylor has no timeouts, but still agree with everything you said.

Oh, I thought he had one TO remaining. But they didn't use one in the drive anyway, which took 36 seconds, lol.

Not one commentator brought up chip Kelly having 3 timeouts left at the 40 going in with 1:13 left and only running 3 plays to play for a fg as we mentioned all coaches do.

The worst decision in this game was Baylor going on 4th and a foot from their own 40 (actually correct), but going with a run out of shotgun instead of sneak.

The timeout by OU was correct. I was at the game. Baylor was going into a decent wind. If Baylor runs 3 times and punts, we take over at about our 50 with 25 seconds left, needing only 15 yards to attempt a winning FG with the wind at our back. The FULL ****** was not accounting for Griffin running around on defense. Good call, horrendous execution.

BTW, Oklahoma had all 3 TOs remaining, Baylor had 0. Baylor also can't start passing early, b/c then we take over with time AND timeouts left if they throw incompletions. They are forced to play conservative until OU trips over their dicks and can't stop the run when it is literally Baylor's only option.

I work some high school football games for TV and yeah, some of them are pretty awful at game management.

On Friday I was shooting a semi-state playoff game and one of the teams had a pure running offense (zero passing yards in the first half). Down 17-0 with 7:00 left in their season, they still kept running the ball to the bitter end. They finally started passing when the clock got under 2 minutes, but obviously it was way too late.

Pretty sad watching a bunch of seniors cry after coming up a win short of the title game when their coach gave them absolutely no chance to win in the 4th quarter.

given that they ran a pure running offense during the season and they were down 17-0 with 7 minutes left, i think their chances of coming back would be 0% regardless.

I watch plenty of high school games — my stepbrother plays. And his team has a terrible quarterback and a decent running game. For them, and I'm sure many other teams, putting the ball in the air is a bad idea under any circumstances. Even if they need a touchdown this very play, they're better off running it. Remember, many high school games not only don't have a balanced attack, they may have no passing attack at all.

On the other hand, the coaching decisions I've seen the past three years tend to make even the dumbest college coach look like Einstein.
