Bill Simmons released a podcast on it, looking forward to listening to it

for real. this is one of those "you remember exactly where you were when you found out" events. Outside of 9/11, Trump winning, and the OJ scandal this is probably the biggest news story in my lifetime.

you could maybe put Bin Laden death in there, but i'd say this even eclipses that. Bin Laden spent the last 10 years of his life watching porn and was basically irrelevant by 2011.

Don't forget Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and Robin Williams.

I have no recollection of where I was when any of those events happened.

I think the circumstances of death also plays a role in how major of a news event it is.

So, crashing to death in a helicopter, with your teenage daughter on board, I think pushes this over Whitney Houston and Robin Williams, and, given how popular Kobe still apparently was in China, maybe pushes it above even Michael Jackson. If Kobe was still playing and in his prime, it would put him over them by a mile. Being retired for a few years, it's closer, but still probably comes out above Michael Jackson death due to the additional circumstances.

That said, I remember Columbine pretty well when that was all happening, and that definitely felt like a much more major news item than even this, by comparison. So, I don't think this is #3 on the list after 9/11 and the Trump election.

Some other big ones:

Also the 2004 mega-tsunami incident that killed 200,000 people spread across a bunch of different countries and continents was a big one. And it was the day after Christmas, so somewhat memorable date-wise too, and happened all in one fell swoop rather than a really long draw out style of news story, so that also makes it more remember-where-you-were-ish.

And (news-wise) the 2011 Japanese tsunami that set off the nuclear meltdown was an even bigger story (killed less people, but the nuclear aspect, combined with it being 1st world Japan, made it mega-huge, and the ongoing-ness and ever increasing complexity of the nuclear aspect kept it in the news for a long time, too. I remember where I was and what I was doing during the initial Tsunami itself, but only because there was a brief moment where it was unclear if an equally large Tsunami would be headed for the west coast of the U.S. or not. As for the bigger aspect of the story (the nuclear meltdown), that was too long and drawn out, so even though it was a bigger overall story, it wasn't one of those remember where you were/what you were doing in an instantaneous moment types of ones.

The BP oil leak was also a pretty huge news story. Not as memorable-immediate-instant ish as this though.

And the trapped Chilean miners thing, too. But ditto as above.

And when the MH370 passenger jet randomly vanished without a trace and remained unsolved in the aftermath. That was a big one. But also ditto as above.

Yea these are the big 3

911 - 8th grade English class in a trailer. Didn't comprehend the magnitude of what we were told at the time

Trump - my friend's recliner as we watched the live lines on Bovada continue to shift in Trump's favor our minds blown

Kobe - in my car driving to the same friend's gender reveal party

All cemented

Pretty long. It's Los Angeles. (Big even physically in terms of diameter, so going from John Wayne airport area to Burbank is what, like 40 or 50 miles or something).

If it had been a Monday morning instead of a Sunday morning, it would've taken EONS since then traffic would've come into play (like multiple hours, one way)

Lol cmon man. This won't even be the biggest news story this year. Let's use 9/11 as a starting point

1. 9/11
2. Invasion of Iraq
3. Trump elected
4. Obama elected
5. Indian Ocean Tsunami
6. MH 370
7. Amanda Knox
8. George Zimmerman trial
9. Deep Water Horizon
10. Space Shuttle Columbia disaster.

Yea, when 911 happened I was delivering surgical instruments to hospitals. At one stop I saw people watching the TV and saw the 1st tower was hit. Then driving 45 minutes to next stop listening on radio to all that was happening.

Got to next stop and here I am carrying a big tub of instruments into a hospital, if people were aware of what was going on at that time then they might have thought I was trying to blow up the hospital. But everyone was clueless, nobody seemed to have any idea yet what was happening.

Brutal, 20 seconds before feed ends the controller asks the pilot if he's paying attention, seems to be pretty clearly pilot negligence

Wait - we know he flew into SNA and then took a helicopter from there?

I don't get why they'd be over Dodgers Stadium - which I heard randomly - but maybe that wasn't accurate. Actually literally no flight path except coming in from Ontario maybe - makes sense that they'd fly over Dodgers stadium.

Also the girl's basketball game was in Thousand Oaks - not Burbank, right?

Assuming SNA - John Wayne airport to Thousand Oaks on a Sunday is probably about an hour and 15 minutes - going the LA no-traffic standard of 80 mph. Early Sunday is about the only daylight hours you can count on sparse traffic in LA. I have no idea what all the Saturday people are doing - but it's almost as bad as a weekday sometimes.

Yea, I'd take both Zimmerman and Amanda Knox off that list I think and replace them with Fukushima Tsunami + Nuclear Meltdown event, and Chilian Miners reaching surface
Edit: Also, Columbia shuttle disaster should be no lower than #6 on that list. (Not a mis-read this time. My previous edit re the Challenger/Columbia eyeballfart was to do with saying if we were going back to Challenger that the O.J. chase and verdict would both be super high on the list). But yea even Columbia shuttle should probably be like Top 6ish or so if we're going 2001 onwards
