It's just absurd. I remember being 16 and 17 and how the rare guy or two at 85 was so fawned over, and how I could pick it up like 1 in 3 pitches. And each mph increase is so much harder than the next.

Ridiculous

Before I had a radar gun I would look at a pitcher and think, he is 5 or 10 mph harder than another pitcher. Then you gun them both and you see that it's only 2-3 mph difference. We play in big regional and national tournaments and we see quite a bit of arms in the 75-82 range. The difference from 82 to 92 is insane. I felt sorry for their catcher. No way my kid could have caught that pitcher.

LOL Umpires! My son's game yesterday his team has the bases loaded 1 out, our team is in the 3rd base side dugout. Grounder to SS who throws to 2nd for the force, tries for the DP not in time. Kid that was on 3rd scored of course, kid that was on 2nd got cute and took a big turn around 3rd so the first baseman throws home and overthrows and he scores.

Here's where it gets funny. Now the catcher has the ball and the runner who was forced out at 2nd is jogging to the 3rd base dugout, catcher throws to 3rd and 3rd baseman tags him, umpire calls him out for the double play. He called the same kid out twice! the assistant coach scoring the game got thrown out because he kept asking "How do I score that blue?" Ump was real stubborn and refused to admit he made a mistake. Game was a blowout anyhow but what incompetence.

My 14 year old was selected to the Adidas All American Showcase in October. He will get a little blurb about him on MLB.com and they will conduct interviews the day before the event. It was a freak deal in that we were playing one of the top teams in the country in a big tournament in Dallas. A Team USA scout was watching a player from the opposing team. My kid happened to have a big game. Had our only hit of the game and his other AB he hit a deep fly that was caught at the fence against a top end pitcher. Threw out two runners and didn't allow a SB. That scout recommended him for the event. It's a great lesson for him, you never know who is watching you play.

Let’s get this rolling again.

My kids HS team won the Arkansas 6A football state championship 52-14. My kid got some mop up duty at the end as the #3 QB. It was an awesome experience and the amount of time and work that the players and coaches put in is incredible.

I don't know much about soccer but I have to coach some games this year. Its 6 and 7 year olds. Play 4 on 4 with no goalies but most teams sit a kid in front of the goalie box the entire game. Our main coach(who will rarely be at games) does that too with her son who is the biggest kid in the league by far and second fastest player on our team. Seems like a waste to me and I'd rather just attack with 4 kids. Don't think any of the kids want to just stand in front of the goal the entire time too. Should I use a goalie?

Hell no. Attack. The kids at that age are there to run around and try and score, not play goalie.

Fortune favors the bold

Not those who sit around and nurse a lead with a goalie

They're 7 year olds, let them run around and decide it on the field

We got ZERO shots on goal last game. We were missing our best player though and 3 kids didn't show up so we played 3 on 3 instead of 4 on 4. Not many girls in the league and my girl and another girl were out there battling for a while while the big kid played "goalie".

I can only offer this advice for parents with kids that excel at their chosen sport. As a top level youth coach for the better part of my adult life the best thing for parents to do is look for teams that have NON-PARENT coaches as your child ages up and becomes competitive. It could mean traveling a bit for practices and paying for training - but it will alleviate the craziness associated with youth sports.

There are just as many crazy non parent coaches as there are parent coaches. We made this change my kids 14u season and it was a disaster. We hired a couple of former college players and they were awful. Didn’t know the game, were extremely unorganized, and did not know how to coach. Looking back, the very best coaches were dads. They had skin in the game and it meant more to them. There were certainly crazy dads out there and many that were in it for their own kid. We played against Dayton Moore’s (Royals GM) team a few times. He had a kid on the team but he treated every kid the same and they were so well coached. Obviously, that is an extreme example but the teams that I respected the most usually had a dad coaching.

Son’s team won 6A baseball state championship today 4-0. Two rings in one season, pure craziness. Our pitcher threw a 2 hitter and struck out 12. He is committed to Arkansas for football and baseball.

Signed my 6 yo daughter up for jr academy tryouts. here in east cobb GA, it's pretty insane how serious baseball / girls soccer can be. I'm looking forward to 10+ years of witnessing ridiculous parenting

My son has always been a large child - generally well into the 99th percentile for height and weight for his age, but when you see your kid every day, it doesn't really hit you. This spring he took up basketball, and I went to see him play. It was a little jarring. He's flat footed in this picture. He's 5ft10 and just turned 12 last month.

Bumping this up because everyone needs to brag on their kids.

Son ended up winning another state championship in football, the following year he was all state and won quite a few player of the year awards but we lost in the semis. Had walk on offers to some D1's and scholarships to D2's. Ended up going the baseball route and is at one of the top JUCO's in the country. He had some lower end D1 offers but he was advised to go JUCO and develop. He throws 88-90 and is one of the slowest pitchers on the team, but his slider is nasty. He's having a good year out of the pen and the team has won 25 in a row.

Daughter won a state championship in volleyball this year. She made varsity but was a backup. Not sure what her prospects are but my guess is D2 or D3 if she wants to keep playing beyond high school.

Congrats buddy, you must be so proud!

Just from a career longevity and earnings potential standpoint, baseball >>> football. That's even before any long term health considerations

I don't know have any thoughts of him playing pro but I am very glad he chose baseball. It was always his love and I don't think he would have survived as a pocket passer in this era of college football. High school football was violent enough.

My niece is 5 and plays in a girls soccer league - her team is the Bumblebees.

Last year at 4 (the Unicorns) she was what I would call above average but there were 2 or 3 who were noticeably better players.

For some reason, she really took off this year and is a goal scorer. She had 9 goals last week and 8 yesterday. She plays the same amount of time as all the rest as they have rules for that.

I’m not posting this to brag on her but to say that yesterday a ‘scout’ from another league approached her parents and asked if she would play for a team in another nearby league.

Scouts for 5 year olds? Wtf?

Your niece is averaging 8.5 goals a game lol. She's probably way above the competition and needs to move up where they respect her goals!

It's a crazy world out there and it is very easy to get wrapped up in it as a parent. Girls sports are typically even crazier than boys. Travel softball was absolutely nuts and I've heard gymnastics and cheer are 10x worse. We GTFO of softball as fast as we could.
