I worked at a hardware store when I was in high school. The owner was a very nice, country-club type. I never really heard him say a cross word until he got mugged one weekend. That Monday at the store the N-word was flying all over the place.

To me that's the more insidious kind of racism, the kind that will never (or very rarely) let you see its true colors. There will always a glass ceiling for minorities if CEOs and football team owners are talking or thinking like this in private.

Yeah Gruden gave Tim Brown a job when he was washed up and looked like he was running in quicksand. So what? It's just more evidence of how sorry a coach Gruden is (I mean was), and that sorryness goes to the deeper issue of the good old boy network that got Gruden into the league in the first place.

This whole issue should be expanded to include a wtf was this guy ever doing coaching an NFL team and why was Dungy fired from the great team he built just to hand it over to mr. Privilege.

The lips things with Gruden is just deep dark racism. No one writes that **** that isn't a hard core racist and it's completely amazing that anyone involved in the NFL or NBA still thinks that way. Nobody has more exposure to successful, driven hard working black men. Cruden has less excuse than anybody.

If someone in charge of hiring and firing other people is proven as holding racist opinions they need to be fired asap. Were I adjudicating, in light of the two comments about the Smith, I would look over Gruden's record of hiring minority coaches to see if he might be truly racist or just saying something to be funny or out of anger. There are times where people say things they don't mean just to hurt someone or for some other purpose and they don't really mean it.

Then again I don't know if his hiring record could save him given the way he was just, down the line, disparaging every minority type like that. It's pat of a cluster of opinions which all have ideological or ingrained bigotry as roots.

To say that big lips stuff in anger someone has to have it inside and no one who isn't deeply racist has that stuff inside.

I looked up gaybet on urban dictionary and neither entry is what I was expecting.

All of this just is deflecting that DeMaurice Smith sucks at his job and lol at voting him to remain head of the NFLPA.

What Gruden said was hurtful, disrespectful and discriminatory.

There is a spectrum of harm are words can cause. This spectrum roughly stems from subconscious bias, to ignorance, to hate. I haven't heard the entirety of what he said and I'd presume that it falls throughout different places of that spectrum.

I feel we have a moral obligation to hold each other accountable. However, we have all said harmful things, all of us. So how do we hold each other accountable without destroying somebody's life? If we did the latter, since we all have said harmful things, we would completely destroy each other. However, without any accountability, there is no growth.

I think the biggest question is how do we hold people accountable in a way that allows them to make a meaningful change moving forward? Does it differ on where they are on that spectrum or their age, lived experience or status in society? Who gets to decide how? All of us as a whole or only the people that the words were directed at/against?

I have no idea what the answers are. I just think these are the big questions that need to be answered to allow individuals and humanity as a whole to grow as much as we are fully capable of.

Jesus Christ. This isn't society punishing Gruden, and this isn't his life being ruined. This is a corporation deciding to end their contract paying someone millions of dollars to represent them.

Yes really when you think about it, what is the sound of one hand clapping? How can we solve practical matters when life's biggest questions go unanswered? Clearly this subject needs more thoughtful pontification.

The team that had the most racist name in all of pro sports until a year or so ago fired its coach for sending racist emails and some folks come on here to post that in the old days everybody said racist stuff and and they shouldn't get fired for just writing a few racist and sexist and abusive emails because that would set a bad precedent for the employment situation of the other old men who used to write and think racist, sexist, and abusive stuff and now hope nobody finds out about it.
