My point was that you "shouldn't be able to understand" any sports fandom. Its all silliness. People came to America, they called one patch of land "Baltimore", they called another patch of land "Pittsburgh"....it should make absolutely no sense that I would love a football team because its from Baltimore and hate a football team because its from Pittsburgh(or vise versa). Yet for some reason a great majority of humans seem to do this(not specifically with Pitt/Balt).
I can understand O's/Nats' holdover allegiances because the Nats haven't even been around for 10 years, most of the DC baseball fans rooted for the O's... I don't think the Skins' fans competed for the Ravens' fans when they suddenly moved to baltimore.

You don't have to say anything. I don't think the fact I dont respect you much as a fan/think you are sort of a bandwagoner affects your life much.

I guess I still don't understand why you "don't respect me." Most of us do not consciously decide to root or not root for the teams we do. Its a totally natural and organic process. Seems weird to not respect someone due to the way this process happened to play out for them.

I can see how you wouldn't respect someone who loves to talk about his team when they are winning but barely even seems to care when they suck. To me this is what a bandwagoner is, and the reason why I don't respect these people is because I feel that if they don't suffer through the painful times then they don't deserve to enjoy the good times. But I fully suffer through the painful times(last 2 AFC Title Games for Ravens, last 20 years for Redskins). I pay my dues.

Anyway, yea....like you said, your opinion of me isn't going to matter to me a ton in the long run. So we can just drop this for now if you want.

Cool. Hopefully you never have to move and "organically" pick a third team as well.

God help SE if Assani organically grows another or team or two that he is naturally drawn to root for.

Having more than one team is the kind of thing high school girls do when they can't decide which QB is better looking. Being a fan of one team has a lot of disappointments and lows in a league as big as the NFL, but the highs are so much better when you're not hedging.

I've lived in: California, New Mexico, Ohio, Maryland, New York, Las Vegas, Toronto, and would like to get a place in San Diego next year....I doubt I'm gonna pick any new team.

I would guess that I'm the only one in this conversation who has experienced being a fan of only one team(until I was ~17 years old I was only a Skins fan) and being a fan of two teams for any part of their non-youth life, correct? As such, wouldn't I be in a much better position to evaluate the bolded statement?

Personally, the highs are just as high as they were when I only rooted for the Redskins. I mean, you guys realize that most years the Ravens/Skins don't win a Super Bowl, so I have to deal with double the failure that you guys do, right? Those double failures are a lot worse. When the highs come around, I fully enjoy them since I fully suffer through the lows.

Those TWO POSTS are really that insufferable? Compare that to Giants fans posting about Elite, LOL Steelers fans, Lions fans coming into our draft thread and voting for Stafford blindly, caseclosed/five4suited swearing that the Bears are better than the Packers, rmthawk posting about the Ravens, etc. etc. etc. How am I any worse than others? The game just ended 20 minutes ago....of course my posting is gonna be a little over the top after a huge win.
Which is internet slang for, "if you think about it the way I think about it" imo.

Someone needs to rename this thread to "Joe Flacco Sucks at Football but Not as Bad as Assani Sucks at Being a Football Fan."

Actually, living equidistant between Baltimore and DC, I know a number of fans of both teams. Not particularly rabid fans, but I tend to avoid rabid NFL fans.

as hard as i've tried to become passionate about a 2nd team (chargers -i've lived in SD for 8 years) i've found that its nearly impossible. there have been times like while being at playoff games and whatnot that i've found myself with a real emotional interest in them but for the most part it is really hard to give a ****. this could maybe be due to them being very poorly managed/coached and having awful fans who aren't passionate about the team but i'm not really sure.

ive found its much easier to get emotional enjoyment out of non vikings games by anti sweating teams i hate (packers, pats) than by sweating teams i *kinda* like. (ravens, any team with a black QB).

NLSoldier is very correct in that rooting against your rivals is way more enjoyable than rooting for a second team.

ya like despite being a charger "fan" for close to a decade i'd prob trade a charger super bowl for like a packer loss in a random nationally televised reg season game. especially if its in any kind of heartbreaking/meltdown/epic fashion.

I think this is an aids debate that I should be obstaining from but w/e.

I agree with assani pretty much, with one small caveat - you get one true love per sport, imo. however, i think people who treat their favorite team like a strict gang allegiance are doing it wrong. You cant root for the giants and dodgers or the red sox and yankees, but I dont find anything wrong with rooting for other teams as long as their success is pretty much independent with your favorite team. For instance, living in Minneapolis, id like the sports teams here to do well as long as it doesnt affect the odds of my team winning - it makes my friends happy and it makes it much more enjoyable to live here. I also think its fair to be fans of players in general. People have tons of reasons for liking players who arent on their favorite team. I like eric decker because i talked to him on campus, was a nice guy, and did well here at the university of minnesota (didnt he get 130 yrds or something yesterday!!!), so sometimes i find myself rooting for the broncos if they are playing a random team like the jets. However i only have one true love when it comes to each sport - for me its the giants, 9ers, warriors, sharks, and gophers for college sports - and itll be that way until im 6 feet under.

edit: like i mentioned I think making a handbook for being a fan is AIDS, but thats how i would do it, i guess.

NLSoldier,
I feel the same way. I have no college bball/football or pro/internation soccer team to root for. I've tried picking teams, but I can't trick myself into caring.

I definitely understand rooting for more than one team and do so in college football thought it doesn't really carry over into other sports. I care a lot about Duke, ND, and UGA football and cannot make myself drop 2 of those teams. However, when it comes to other sports I root for both Notre Dame and UGA casually, but basically never watch any regular season games of either team while basically never missing a Duke basketball game even if it is guaranteed to be a blowout.

I think the DC/MD area is a little different then most because of when the Ravens came to Baltimore. I went to high school in that area in the 80s. Most of my HS was full of Redskins fans. Now, my HS friends on facebook are almost all huge Ravens fans. So I guess I can sort of understand how someone who was once a Redskins fan can become a Ravens fan when they move. But I think most who adopted the Ravens made a clean break from the Redskins.

I dunno, but DC is very much Redskins territory, there is no overlap, skins fans don't care about the ravens and vice versa. DC area is pure Redskins... absolutely no one around DC gives a **** about baltimore.

As I said, I grew in in PG county, MD. Most of FB friends from MD are Ravens fans. My FB friends from VA are still mainly Redskins fans, though. I don't think I know anyone who actually lives in DC. Seems like my friends from VA have adopted the Nats, though.
