Agreed. I went to Rice (top 5 baseball program) and we all knew the stars that played there (Berkman was a hero on campus). I'm wouldn't say that everyone knew them, but if you have a good program, the players are known by a large part of the population.

It is relevant as an example of a reason why speculation on crimes can be terrible and another reason to let things play out in court before those of us who are not involved or intimately knowledgeable of all the details pass judgments. In fact, I can't think of another rape case involving college athletes that got as much media coverage as this one since the Duke Lacrosse case so it may be useful as a cautionary tale.

But I don't see the "passing judgment" in this thread that you seem to think exists, which makes me think your whole "Guys, let's wait for the facts" approach is just a personal axe to grind (supported by the fact that you basically took the same stance in the tdomeski thread) and it makes you look like a rape apologist.

this thread is much better than the internet and media and a great example of why 2p2 is better than the rest of the world at evaluating most situations objectively. however, elsewhere it seems like everyone either "knows" that he raped her or that he didn't rape her despite the fact that these people have no more access to information than any of us do and have probably often followed it less closely than 2p2ers.

I am definitely passing judgement on the detective and Tally PD in general. I don't feel the least bit bad about being this judgmental since finding out if a crime happened or not is sort of part of their job. I mean, sure, if you'd cover it up anyway if it were true it would make sense, but that's not exactly leading me to say, "Wait, wait--these charges may turn out to be untrue! It's not like anyone has ever checked, after all!"

It does happen all the time. I had a girl lie one time and basically accuse me of rape and then take it back rather quickly after she got the attention she wanted and got me in trouble. I had sex with one of my best friend's sisters after a crazy night out drinking. We were both wasted and it just happened. I didn't follow through with any type of relationship for several reasons, but mainly because I wasn't that into her. About a month later to get back at me for not calling her she told my buddy I had sex with her while she was passed out. Then, after the damage was done she admitted she was awake. Bitches be crazy. Wouldn't be surprised at all if that were the case here.

Cops are familiar with this type of behaviour, ie, heartbroken girls crying wolf, and if they correctly identified this as that type of situation by interviewing her, then they aren't at all to blame. They were doing their job. It's not as easy as it looks you know. If she was being legit and they really intimidated her into being quiet because they care more about football than the citizens they swore to protect, or they were paid off by boosters, etc. then they're of course scum.

99% of the "jumping to conclusions" that have been posted have been speculation about the agenda behind the claim being false, like in that link that names the alleged victim and comes up with like 3 different stories for it not being rape
