Hmm, I guess you'll see from other writeups, but perhaps a bit about the person, some accomplishments, the areas in which he worked/excelled, how this shapes the direction of your studio, etc. Not looking for a thesis or anything but probably 2 paragraphs.

For example, I'd say how Kubrick has range; he has directed class horror type movies (Clockwork Orange) to full range of sci fi (2001 Space Odyssey) to old classic epics (Spartacus) etc. I'd make note of how these movies not only made alot of money but were also critically acclaimed. So, you're building in both directions

Look at the top picks in like the football draft. Basically explain why you wanted him and what you think he brings to the table.

Kubrick was on my director shortlist, I like him because he's versatile. Good for critical acclaim, but there will be lots of directors with bigger box office. Kubrick only directed a few movies after Clockwork.

Still, I like it.

Tell us why Kubrick is awesome and why your studio is going to rule. Add pictures and youtube clips for bonus points.

Posting from my phone, damn PA is late (although there is a snowstorm going on)

Just echoing what others said. I'm slightly surprised kubrick went 1st overall but he's def. Top 15 value. This wasn't an LT2 pick (or marbury)

Jesus I pick in the middle of all of these drafts

I think write ups are more important in this than the other drafts, so maybe we should have a rule that you have to announce your pick with the write up, not just saying who you pick and doing the write up later? I know that it causes people to skip on write ups (myself included).

i don't think he's that versatile. his films all tended towards the dark and nihilistic - at least the back half of his career. while he did a lot with that, it's tough even seeing where he'd fit in in today's landscape. tremendous director and artist, but PHB's actors are going to hate being drafted and hold out - kubrick was famous for making everyone do an insane number of takes.

i guess it's tough seeing a director who is that much more versitaile. ldo i can't name names...

Jeez, you guys are rough. I thought Kubrick was pretty self-explanatory. It's not like the Texans going Mario Williams over Bush/Young lol. Y'all know why I picked him but I'll work on the write-up anyway. Was just on the phone for a half-hour with my dad.

Will work on write-up now and post in Selection thread.

We appreciate it phb. Also phb may have multiple direcots in his studio anyway, we don't know. I like dark films...

the fact that Kubrick is a good pick at number #1 even confuses me more in terms of how we are judging this
All his movies went over budget and were nightmare productions, they typically didn't do that well at the box office, but they were usually critical acclaimed by movies critics snobs but not so much by the general public

lol I thought about trading down because someone said Eastwood was the clear #1. That may be true but I didn't want him. But then I thought Private Joker....hmmm, he may steal who I want. That would suck. lol.

Can't wait to see PJ's selection!

lol I think you're being way too literal. Remember it's the SE forum who is judging the movies. Not the ******ed movie-going public, or critic snobs. I think the members of SE can appreciate the Kubrick selection.

I assume PHB's studio goal is to win over the likes of Ebert and Roper and other tea house critics. Some studios might choose to go a route that produces movies that make money or are enjoyable to watch, but we can hardly discount the direction PHB has chosen to take.

What are people talking about when they say they'd trade down? For what? A lower pick plus what?

Glad for the spreadsheet so I don't have to ask what all the snake business is about.

I thought the same thing, to be honest, but each studio gets to choose their direction. If phornblower is out to make art for the sake of art that's his choice.

Personally, I want to smash the box-office until it's unrecognizable, become a billionaire and laugh my ass off in my private G5, posting from my G1 while drinkin' some G2.

Besides, it's just 1 pick. He could have a plan to pick up moneymakers later on.

Yeah I think each studio will be judged in the context of that the owner is trying to achieve. Obviously every studio will be judged for both financial prospects and critical response, but if someone is clearly aiming to make great movies they will get some slack on the money side (and vice versa).

You might trade your pick now for a bigger jump later. Too bad Epip didn't join this thing, we'd already have half a dozen trades to get all the new guys broke in. It's not going to be the same without him.

Trading is all apart of the game. It's strongly encouraged.

I love drafts but I have no idea about this at all or where to go--didn't feel like having to do a ton of research again.

OK, I'm not even drunk or high, and I have no idea what this means. Somebody might trade multiple later picks for a single earlier pick? Is that it?
