Mario Lemieux.

Not to derail the thread, but Greg Norman had some bad luck in not getting his first major under his belt due to Bob Tway, and Larry Mize getting pretty lucky against him.

In 1948 Ben Hogan won 10 golf tournaments. In 1949 he survived a near fatal head on collision with a Greyhound bus, was told he might never walk again, and 4 years later went on to win 5 out of the 6 golf tournaments he entered in 1953 including 3 majors at age 40. He didn’t have a chance for all 4 since the PGA Championship and British Open tournaments overlapped and he skipped the PGA. No one won 3 majors in the same season until Tiger Woods did it in 2000. He has 69 career wins including 9 major championships.

Ted Williams, the last major leaguer to hit .400 for a season, hit a home run in his last at bat, and is arguably the greatest hitter in baseball history, had prime years in his career interrupted twice to go be a Navy pilot during WWII and a Marine pilot in the Korean War. Oh yeah, after he died in 2002 at the age of 83 his kids had him cryonically frozen in case medical science could bring him back someday and his head still might be in a jar in some lab.

Kansas City Chiefs have had a pretty tragic history

Joe Delaney: KC Chiefs Running Back 1981-82 Died age 24

Delaney won AFC rookie of the year and made the Pro Bowl his rookie season. While hanging out at a water park, Delaney witnessed 3 children struggling to swim in a man made pond. Despite not knowing how to swim, Delaney dove in to rescue them. Delaney and two of the children died.

Derek Thomas: KC Chiefs LB 1989-1999 Died age 33

Thomas was a 9 time Pro Bowler and made the 1990's all decade team. While on his way to watch the NFC championship game, he crashed his SUV and was paralyzed from the chest down. Several weeks later he died from a blood clot. Really amazing player.

Javon Belcher: KC Chiefs 2009-12 Died age 25

Not an elite player like the previous deceased Chiefs, this case was pretty horrific. Belcher killed his GF by shooting her 9 times then drove to the Chiefs facility. Belcher held a gun to his head after he exited the car and the team's owner, gm, head coach, and another coach approached him to talk him down. He said he killed his GF and asked them to take care of his daughter then shot himself in the head. Chiefs played a game the next day. Medical reports showed he suffered from CTE

Butttt, now we have one of the most BLESSED Chiefs

Patrick Mahomes: KC Cheifs QB

His father and god-father were both MLB players. Recruited for baseball and football. Considered a top prospect in the 2014 MLB draft. Entered the NFL after his junior year and won MVP his rookie season. Having two pro athletes in your family is great but it has got to be even better when your also a stud athlete yourself. Unless he is really self conscious about his slightly weird voice, life must be pretty smooth sailing,

Gretzky has no business being on the list. He is as squeaky clean a superstar as you'll ever find.

Bo Jackson should be there for having that freak tackle cut his career short.

Niki Lauda passed away today. His career tragedy inspired Ron Howard to make a movie, so that surely counts.

Would for me also for someone who wasn't a psychopath. It doesn't even move the needle for me in Hernandez' case.

Nick Adenhart and his friends.

Quote:
Shortly after midnight on April 9, 2009, Adenhart was involved in a car crash in Fullerton, California, just hours after being the starting pitcher in the previous night's game. Police reported that an individual driving a red Toyota Sienna minivan ran a red light and broadsided a gray Mitsubishi Eclipse in which Adenhart was a passenger, sending it crashing into a telephone pole.[4][33][34] The driver of the Eclipse, Cal State Fullerton cheerleader Courtney Stewart, as well as another passenger, Henry Pearson, were pronounced dead at the scene.[1]

Adenhart and Jon Wilhite, another passenger in the Mitsubishi, were taken to University of California, Irvine Medical Center, where Adenhart died as a result of his injuries at the age of 22.[33] Wilhite suffered internal decapitation and survived after undergoing five hours of surgery to reattach his skull to his spine six days after the crash.[35]

The minivan driver fled the scene on foot, but was later arrested and identified as Andrew Thomas Gallo.[1] On May 27, 2009, Gallo was indicted by the Orange County grand jury on three counts of murder, one count each of felony hit-and-run, driving under the influence and causing injury, and driving with a .08 percent blood alcohol or higher and causing injury and death.[36] Gallo had a blood alcohol content of .19 percent two hours after the crash, and was also driving with a suspended license.[36] On June 8, 2009, Gallo entered a not guilty plea at his arraignment.[37] After a two-week jury trial held in September 2010, Gallo was convicted on three counts of second-degree murder, two counts of driving under the influence causing great bodily injury, and one felony count of hit-and-run.[38] A bench trial found Gallo guilty of driving on a suspended license.[39] On December 22, 2010, Gallo was sentenced to 51 years to life in jail.[40]

The path wasn’t clear, but the destination was not in doubt. Nick Adenhart seemed bound for baseball greatness, with lightning in an arm that produced 94-mph fastballs and sharp overhand curves, before the 22-year-old Angels pitcher was killed by a drunk driver on April 9, 2009.

Joe Saunders, a former Angels pitcher whose clubhouse locker was next to Adenhart’s, thinks Nick would have been a solid starter for five or six years before moving to the bullpen — like Hall-of-Famer John Smoltz — and becoming a dominant setup man or closer.

Former Angels reliever Kevin Jepsen, who came up through the minor leagues with Adenhart and was also a 2009 locker mate, is convinced Nick had the stuff and mental makeup to flourish as a big league starter for a decade or more.
