There have been many great sports betting moments in history. Games that were out of hand that saw a miracle cover, games with an unexpected Pick Six to swing the spread... Let us recount these tales of sports betting lore.

The game: 2009 Big Ten Championship Game. Purdue vs. Ohio State

The line: Purdue -5

The setup: A Swiss army knife game for Robbie Hummel with 9 pts, 11 reb, and 5 ast has given Purdue the lead 61-58 with :15 left. At this point, a chop is an amenable result for Purdue bettors with the Big Ten's most dangerous scorer in Evan Turner has been Ohio State's best player today.

The action: Purdue inbounds the ball after 2 made Turner free throws, and Chris Kramer gets fouled right away. Purdue is a good FT shooting team, luckily for bettors. Kramer drains both, and OSU gets the ball back down 63-58. A quick run down court and a quick 3 by William Buford rims out. I would expect Thad Matta to call off the dogs, but no such thing happens. Kramer collects the rebound and gets fouled immediately with :04 left on the clock. Victory is in hand and the Purdue bench begins to celebrate. Kramer calmly drains both free throws to give Purdue the lead 65-58.

The villain:

Enter John Diebler. Most players would take the classy route. Admit defeat and dribble out the ball, and congratulate your opponents on a well-played tournament and wish them well. Not this man. Not on this day. Diebler receives the inbounds pass and streaks down the court like Derrick Nix running to a buffet line. Over Purdue's raised arms, in a sign of victory and not an attempt to block his shot, Diebler drains the 3 in the last game of his Big Ten season.

Final score: Purdue 65, Ohio State 61.

Add yours, please elaborate, and please, the more wild and obscure, the better.

Giants RB (Csonka?) fumbles the ball on the final play against the Eagles in a regular season game.

Herman Edwards recovers and returns it for a TD.

that actually determined who won the game

for this i think about moments like the harbaugh safety decline this year that had 0% impact on the winner but 100% impact on the spread in a crazy way

Thread was inspired by last night's game.

The game: 2013 MAAC Championship Game. Manhattan Jaspers vs. Iona Gaels

The line: Iona -4

The setup: Iona has had a consistent lead all game with Manhattan hanging tough. Manhattan is struggling to score enough points to come back, with their Kenpom rated 280th Adjusted Offensive Efficiency. With 15 seconds left and up 58-52, Iona inbounds the ball, gets it ahead to a streaking David Laury, who jams it in to put the exclamation point on the game. Iona celebrates a return trip to March Madness. Manhattan passes the ball in with :06 left, passes the ball downcourt to the corner, and Shane Richards drains a corner 3 to make the score 60-55. When the ball swishes, there is one-tenth of a second left on the clock.

The rub: Iona students don't care about this .1 second left, as apparently enough of them didn't bet on their own team to cover. Iona students rush the floor to celebrate their win, while the coach pleads with his students to get off the floor. Order is restored, but Iona is assessed a technical foul. Manhattan's Donovan Kates heads to the line, drains 2 consecutive free throws, and Iona passes the ball in to officially celebrate their win.

Final score: Iona 60, Manhattan 57.

About 10 years ago Cleveland vs KC. The line was pk. Cleveland is up 2 and KC has ball on own 45 with 4 sec left. Green goes back and as he is being sacked he laterals to a O-lineman who runs for like a 20 yd gain. Browns make the tackle and start walking off the field, but wait there's a flag. Duane Rudd threw his helmet in celebration during the play thinking the game was over. 15 yds from the end of the run and 1 more untimed play. Easy FG KC wins by one.

I looked for 2 seconds and didn't find it but I remember there being some Favre game 3 years ago where he threw a last second interception pick six which was literally the only way the spread could have been covered IIRC

Near awful moment: the other week I had Aaron Craft u4.5 assists @ Indiana. In the 1st half, Craft steals the ball, passes it off to Shannon Scott who finds Sam Thompson in transition for a dunk. Somehow, this happens in the play by play:

11:45 Aaron Craft Steal. 11-13
11:40 Sam Thompson made Dunk. Assisted by Aaron Craft. 13-13

Craft gets credited with the assist, nobody corrects it. Thankfully he pinned at 4, but if he got one more dime I probably would have written a series of angry letters to whoever does the scorekeeping for Indiana.

Eh, it's better if it's an improbable crazy play that is irrelevant to the game's outcome. So you have degenerates going crazy while normal people don't give a ****

2008 USC/Stanford

Line was USC -24, I believe

USC is up 28 with 3 seconds left. Stanford has the ball on the USC 18 yard line. Stanford lines up to kick a field goal. Pete Carroll decides, inexplicably, to call a timeout. John Harbaugh then decides to send out his offense.

Stanford throws a touchdown pass and covers.

I had Jags +9 for a significant amount. Of course the Bengals wouldn't just fall on it even though the game is over.

edit: Also for fun the refs gave it the most half assed review of all time, clearly just wanting to go home even though there were multiple times when someone was almost out of bounds or the player was almost down.

Haha I remember this night. One of the most hilarious sports betting games of all time. The spite go-for-it into a TD.

Had Stanford -7.5 against USC in this game. USC led most of the way, ends up in 3OT, Stanford scores and hits the 2pt. USC drives down to the goal line and...

Chris Duhon hitting a half court 3 for Duke against UConn in the 2004 semis. Lost 79-78 instead of 79-75. Estimated $100 million shot essentially.

Last night's Iona game, USC covering like a 10pt spread in OT, and Marquette stepping on the inbounds line on the last second are the 3 that come to mind first.

MNF 1997. LOLSteelers vs Jaguars. Jags block Steelers FG attempt on final play of game and return it to the house to cover.

Jacksonville has a 23-21 lead late in the game. I forget what the line on the game was but the Jags were not covering at the time.

The Steelers engineered a nice drive, setting up a Norm Johnson field goal attempt for the win.

The Jaguars blocked the kick, and Chris Hudson returned the ball up the sideline. As he ran toward the end zone, Bill Cowher, who eventually apologized for his actions, looked ready to tackle or take a swing at Hudson.

The touchdown ended the game at 30-21. Jags cover. I remember remarking to my crew just prior to the kick that the only way I cover was if they block the FG and return it for the score. My friends laughed at me like I was insane. I recall losing my **** in sheer ecstasy at the moment when it was clear that the block was going to be returned for a TD.

Pretty sure I had pretty big $$ on Ravens -4 in this game.

http://scores.espn.go.com/nfl/boxscore?gameId=301213034

Ravens had the Texans pinned near their goal line in OT, punt for the Texans would have put Ravens near FG range.

In case the team you bet on is too far down to make a miracle last quarter comeback you can always hope for this scenario to unfold...

Many of you know the story but for those that don't I think you'll enjoy it.

2002 Wisconsin vs UNLV The betting line started at Wisconsin -3 and apparently there was a ton of action on Wisconsin so the line went to -7 at the start of the game.

Fast forward to the fourth quarter and Wisconsin is winning easily 27-7 and it looks like an easy cover. Not so fast! With 7:41 left in the 4th Q, 2 minutes and 41 seconds before the game was to become official, there was a power outage apparently caused by a car crashing into a transformer a mile and a half down the road from Sam Boyd Stadium. Of course conspiracy theorists speculated the power outage was no accident at all.

It was ruled no game so all bets were off and money refunded. This was huge for the Vegas books as supposedly Wisconsin was bet heavily.
