Gol Botofogo. Stopped by keeper but it slow motion rolled in across the line. Place is a madhouse. Vasco silent. 70’

Wow. With Flamengo housing portuguesa, Botofogo needs a tie to advance. Two EASY chances and they blow them both in stoppage time. Vasco wins (deservedly so). Vasco advance. Botofogo out of the Cup.

Semifinals will be: Vasco v Portuguesa and Flamengo. V Fluminense.

Good night from Estádio Nilton Santos.

Botafogo

Unless it's some kind of Portuguese joke I'm missing

Decent first half for Botafogo. Santos had the best chance and I have no idea how they missed. Guy was through on goal, keeper made a nice save and the rebound fell to a Santos player inside the 18 with an open goal and he clanked it off the bar

Do the mata mata's have the away goal tiebreaker?

Possibly the most boring football game I've ever watched. And I religiously follow a league that has Jose Mourinho as a manager

I’m an idiot and read the table wrong. So the Taça Rio semifinals are Flamengo and Fluminense Thursday, then a rematch of Vasco and Botafogo tonight. Botafogo advanced on goal differential.

Sample size but Vasco was the better team vs Botafogo on Sunday. Don’t know the odds but I’d take them in a 2-way at any +money price.

Botafogo - Santos heading to penalties. Boraaaa fogo

That was the worst penalty shootout I've ever seen. 3 guys skied it over the bar, 1 guy completely missed wide. So many Brazilians love the walk/stutter/stop approach to the PK and it never ever seems to work. Santos win 3-1 on penalties and will play Palmeiras in the semi-finals barring a miracle

Yeah Brazilians have big time fear of messing up. WIM isn’t a strength.

Was at Pearl Jam with 50k of my friends but sounds like it was Vasco’s game to lose and they did.

That's very accurate lol. That's exactly the reason why Brazil tend to collapse spectacularly when going behind in the knockout stages of a World Cup like against Netherlands and Germany in the last 2 World Cups.

WIM is good
WITM is bad (Want it too much)

OTOH we have a pretty good record in penalty shootouts in international competitions.

Neymar is an awful penalty taker too. I'm not sure if stats back that up but his stupid stutter step and stop should have been corrected by now and seems to infect Brazilian players in the lower leagues. Zero confidence when he takes a penalty. And put one 5 seats next to me in the mezzanine during a friendly with Colombia at Giants stadium.

Fluminense draw vs Flamengo, advancing to the finals due to superior group play results. Finals for Taça Rio are Sunday, Fluminense vs Botafogo

He did put the winning penalty away in the Olympic final. Olympics ain't the world cup but iirc that was huge for brazilians.

Today at 16:00 local time in the legendary Maracană is the Taça Rio final between red hot Fluminense and Botafogo.

Fluminense with a convincing 3-0 win at Maracană in front of a crowd maybe 60% in their favor onnthe back of great transition scoring and 3 fantastic saves by the keeper. Best team start to finish this tourney. Well earned win.

Lame that Liga MX takes themselves seriously and doesn't play competitive games during international breaks like lol MLS. Was getting into watching a few different teams and love the weeknight football they seemed to have (between liga MX and Copa MX). Though it does appear they had some friendlies between liga MX teams during the international break but I ain't watching those.

So with Fluminense winning the city championship now they have a shot at the State title. It came down to the same four finalists as the city title only with a different semifinal. Tonight Flamengo lost to Botafogo as big favorites. Tomorrow night Vasco and Fluminense do battle to see who meets Botafogo in the final. Very likely will be a Botafogo and Fluminense rematch.
