Thread for Latin American soccer, leagues and cups including Libertadores and Sudamerica

But really we are all here for American Champions League (aka Libertadores)!

Copa Libertadores is quite the big deal. And due to the increased turnover at the club level due to the best players always being sold off, it's got some pretty awesome parity. I've followed it the last three years, when traditional powers Boca Juniors (ARG) and Atletico Nacional (COL) won in 2015 and 2016, respectively, and last year Gręmio (BRA) in an surprise.

Here's the schedule, all times local. Working on a better less big one but this'll do for now.

How good are they? Tommorow my local team U.de Chile make their debut against them.
We are preety bad at football but we have a bunch of experienced guys ( Copa America winners in the team include Herrera, Pizarro, Pinilla, Jara and Beausejour) with an experienced manager so Im hoping we can use our nous to be competitive in the group.

The good news is that because we had inaugartion day yesterday there were no football games played during the weekend which is important considering we are old and Rio has plenty of humidity, the bad news is that chilean teams have been absolutely awful in the past few years at the international level.

Money has been coming in on U de Chile. I think Vasco is down this year but road games are always tough in South America. I'm on the u2.5

That is probably because of the news that 8 Vasco da Gama players had food poisoning yesterday.

I was at the match. Chile def were the better side. Vasco was more or less relegated to long balls and counters and never cohesively threatened.

That said the refs were def favorable to Chile and #13 is a punk.

I didnt know Angelo Araos even existed until yesterday, if him and Soteldo have a good cup we will have good chances to get out of the group. At the southamerican level you want a mix of experienced players that are not too much past their prime and young exciting talent that will eventually move to a better league. Eventually you hit the jackpot with the young talent and you go deep in Libertadores.

Is it worth having a Libertadores thread?

Yes! I'm all in on Libertadores this year. Though there is that "all other leagues" thread but no one seems to check it. I think I have the last 3 posts in there unanswered including an iso: Clark post as the last one lol

it used to be worth it when LIGA MX teams were in it, but now no one cares about that tournament.

I would have a southamerican club football thread instead. It will probably be 90% Libertadores but it can also include Copa Sudamericana and other stuff.

It could also host all the CONMEBOL GHWing during the upcoming World Cup.

Anyone proficient enough to make an OP? Libertadores heavy obv. Looking at you Valenzuela, clark, or BRPokah if he's still around.

Got some action tonight

Bolivar -1 -130 (lol Bolivia teams at home ftw)
Flamengo/Emelec u2 +120
Atletico Nacional -1.5 -125
Corinthians -2 +120

I’ll do it just because I’ll be able to edit an OP after moving the relevant posts there. Val feel free to improve it. Won’t be hard.

Randomly decided to tail these just for the hell of it. Didn't see it early enough to bet Bolivar, and didn't want to bet an u2 and root against goals.

1-0-1, Thanks Clarky!

I'm not Clark

3 goals in last 25 minutes of Emelec-Flamengo was unlucky. Thought I was sitting pretty on that one. Still running good though
