This stuff is ripe for a full blown internet ****storm, imo.

I mean, everybody knows they are corrupt beyond recognition. The internet can be powerful if a concerted effort is made.

I laughed at them, and was mildly mad, when they banned German bakeries to sell "WM Brötchen" in 2006 (something like "WC Bread Roll" or "WC Scone") because of trademark or whatever. But what they are doing here is clearly going too far. And I'm not exclusively talking about Qatar. Awarding it to Russia is, as well, clear as day a product of prime corruption. And everybody knows it, and they know that everybody knows it.

I want to puke.

I can see russia although I would be more surprised to find out they hadn't been bribed than bribed.

Qatar, however, is potripper level stuff. They made it too obvious they were cheating.

I don't think that obviousness is really relevant. If they take it away from them it'll be because organising the WC in Qatar is deemed unfeasible, not because an investigation proves that they had cheated.

But these reports show that the fact the WC isn't feasible was known from the start.

I mean that it surely won't be "you cheated, therefore you won't host it", maybe it'll be "we'd love to let you host it, but your land is too damn hot!", and probably it'll be "**** it, if we take it away India or whoever might not bribe us to get the 2034 or 2038 WCs, so just host it and pray for the best"

FIFA is a really unique body. I can't think of many NGOs with such power. Example - in the previous decade, the Polish government (the Ministry of Sport) tried to suspend the managing board of the notoriously corrupt Polish FA. Sure, Poland is no superpower, but it's a decently sized European country, a member of the EU. FIFA (or was it just UEFA? it doesn't matter really) threatened they'd not only take away the Euro 2012, but that they also wouldn't let our NT and our clubs play in any international competitions, and the government caved immediately.

This is relatively standard AFAIK.

Its happened whenever there has been government interference in Nigeria, Iraq, Syria and a bunch of other places. Sure Poland is generally considered to be a more stable and powerful entity then those countries, but FIFA obviously prefers to deal with associations rather then governments for relatively obvious reasons.

It's standard for FIFA, but it's very non-standard for any other NGO. Governments usually put up with NGOs to the point where these NGOs start interfering with governments' matters. NGOs have no armies or death squads or spies, so if there's meaningful conflict they're told to **** off and they listen.

Sepp Blatter expects the 2022 World Cup to be moved from Summer to Winter.

Quote:
President Sepp Blatter expects FIFA to switch the 2022 World Cup in Qatar from summer to either winter or spring.

Blatter said FIFA's executive committee will almost certainly confirm the move - to avoid the heat of the Qatar summer - when it meets in Zurich on October 3.

"I would be very much surprised, more than surprised, if the ExCo will not accept the principle you cannot play in summer in Qatar," Blatter said. "What will be following, this would be then decided later."

Blatter admitted any switch in the timetable would have to be taken after consultation with leagues, clubs, national associations and players, through their international union FIFPro.

The tournament is currently due to take place in June and July when temperatures routinely rise above 40 degrees.

When the decision was made, the World Cup organising committee expressed confidence that air-conditioning in the stadiums would reduce the pitch-side temperatures to 27 degrees.

But FIFA and Blatter have slowly been backtracking on that position in recent months.

Now, some of the same FIFA board members who helped choose Qatar in a decisive 14-8 vote over the United States, are set to switch the tournament hosting plan.

"Those that have taken the decision at the time, they knew there is problems with the heat. They knew it, because it was in the (technical) report," Blatter said. "It was wrong to say, 'Now we have to play in summer,' because in summer you cannot play there."

"Therefore the ExCo now shall take the decision and they will take it that in summer you can't play in Qatar."

Blatter has previously suggested November as a possible start for the month-long tournament while recent speculation has focused on May. A January-February slot is unlikely because of a clash with the 2022 Winter Olympics.

"What will be the ongoing situation with such a decision, we have to look on the international calendar," Blatter said. "We have to look if and how it is possible, when we don't play in summer, when is the best time to play?"

Out of interest, anyone got odds from a betting site that this takes place in Qatar IN summer 2022, same question with winter 2022?

Seems quite a huge favourite to happen in winter right?

I understand it's completely rotten and corrupt to the core, but why can't the English, Spanish, French, Italian and German FAs say they won't send national teams for a winter world cup and their leagues will continue. Would just force FIFAs hand to select a far more deserving country

Let's say FIFA calls their bluff. What'll they do with all the Brazilians/Argentinians/etc. playing in European leagues?

And would the USA win the WC with all the European players (and South Americans playing in Europe) still playing in domestic leagues?

The leagues can still survive for a month. None of the FIFA higher ups would be able to and we could all just start from scratch!
