Saying 20 years ago is exaggerating. We're not talking about hosting the 2014 World Cup. We're talking about the 2022 World Cup. It will have been 28 years between World Cups by then

FTR, Mexico hosted 16 years apart (1970 and 1986) (an emergency selection after Columbia was removed as host in 1982).

Other countries that hosted twice:

Italy: 56 years apart (1934 and 1990)
France: 60 years (1938 and 1998)
Brazil: 64 years (1950 and 2014)
Germany: 32 years (1974 and 2006)

Canada and Mexico have both put in for the 2026 World Cup, so I guess both countries hope that Qatar stays in Qatar. A 2022 US World Cup would mean no North American World Cup until 2034 at the earliest (and probably much later than that).

well if they could get 22, i'm sure they'd withdraw their 26 bid

or whatever, move 2022 to Ingerrrland, and give us 26

22 or 26 almost has to be in our region, given we haven't had one since 94

(and as was mentioned, in 86 Mexico was a fill in)

FIFA president Sepp Blatter has confirmed that he intends to ask for the tournament to be held in the winter as temperatures in the Gulf state can reach 50°C during the summer.

It was initially expected that the tournament would be brought forward to January 2012, but kicker reports the intention is now to move it to November that year, with the final set to take place on December 18.

A winter World Cup would have a significant effect on domestic football across Europe. The major leagues in the continent all kick off in the summer, with the Russian Premier League changing its schedule to follow the same pattern a year ago, and will face severe disruption as a result of the Qatar tournament.

The planned change had been backed by Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and the German Football League’s executive Andreas Rettig.

That really sucks. World Cup being slammed into NFL/NCAAF/NBA/NHL time blows.

Also obviously is terrible for EPL/Serie A/La Liga/Bundesliga. Die blatter

The NHL takes a break during the Olympics. So do Brazilian leagues (and presumably other South American leagues) when the World Cup is in their season. Why is it so unthinkable that European leagues do the same?

they probably will, it's just far from optimal

and as has been pointed out earlier, moving the WC to winter means re-arranging the calendar for years

the whole thing basically makes no sense other than "welp, we already took their bribes, so..."

NHL takes a way shorter break than those leagues would need to in order to properly accommodate players. We're also talking about an extremely large scale of stoppages. Another thing to keep in mind is that soccer is effectively a year round sport and taking a significant chunk of time off really would throw things off in a big way. Way way way way more than it does for the NHL.
