Rugby is named after the school where it originated.
The administrative body in England is still called the RFU, the Rugby Football Union.
Whether the story of William Webb-Ellis being the first to pick up the ball and run with it is still up for debate, but they still name the World Cup trophy after him.
Like soccer, it used to be acceptable to call it rugger, but that’s frowned upon these days.
