I'm just happier to see a WC in Qatar rather than USA or Australia. I know nothing about Qatar, it'll be a cool learning experience and I think it's cool to have a tournament in the part of the world.

Why should Qatar get it over Australia?

Wouldn't have been upset with Australia. Or Japan (even though there was not a chance they would get it). But for a country that has never even played in a WC, is over 40c, has a population that is less than a quarter of New York City, alone, has alcohol rules and has to build new stadiums?

For most of the World Cup's history the tournament was always held in western Europe or Latin America. Recently FIFA has boldly taken the World Cup to new continents and markets. The United States in 1994, the Far East in 2002 and sub-saharan Africa in 2010. Eastern Europe and the Middle East are two regions of the world that have never hosted before, despite the immense popularity of the sport in those places.

Most people in this thread are using criteria such as what country they live in or what would be the best place to party for a couple weeks, but of course FIFA has bigger objectives than that. There are arguments for having the tournament in established countries, Germany was a smashing success, but there's also a strong rationale for spreading football's biggest spectacle to new areas of the world that haven't hosted before.

yeah why don't they instead get backwards countries that lack resources to build huge soccer stadiums that they have absolutely no use for when the tournament is over, that's a brilliant move

They have enough time to prepare, I would guess they will put a lot of money into vastly improving youth football conditions and probably sign a bunch of promising young players to their league and make them Qatar citizens/players for the national team. (this is not racism, this is my prediction).

The country is so small tho, there will certainly be a chance they will not advance to the 2nd round...

But nontheless, now that the decision is made I am excited to see how these hosts will work out... both hosts are at the extreme ends of the scale concerning size and climate (and money), will be interesting to see how everything works out.
