I don't really get the bitching about 3rd place games in general, last World Cup both teams clearly didn't wanna be there and it sucked but that was the first time in like five WCs that that was the case
Because it's so pointless. Why have a friendly exhibition game as part of a major tournament.

Exactly, most of those matches play like friendlies with bench players and high totals because nobody gives a few about the actual 3rd place

I guess, but as a German fan in 2006 and 2010 I was happy that the bronze game existed. In 2006 the semi final loss would've been an awful note to end a great summer on, and 2010 had a bright young team that I was quite happy to see play one more time.

I think for teams that kind of overachieved to get to the semi it's a worthwhile farewell. There's been a lot of those teams in 3rd place games recently.

Possible that I'm too sentimental and swayed by 06 and 10 on this. In 2012 I was quite happy that it was over after the semi.

Ronaldo went home already, got his order of two new kids delivered during the tournament. No one really cares about third place

Don't forget that in 2014 we all got to see the opposite of this as Brazil disappointed the home crowd one extra time

On the bright side for Mexico, Osorio might be fired after this.

Still can't believe he substituted out their best player halfway thru the game, in that group stage game (vs Russia I think?).

at the minimum, Mexico is a stone cold lock to make semis. but it really is 1st place or failure. this team is so stacked with talent and it's time for them to deliver.
Finishing 4th in a tournament with only three good teams seems about right.
