lololol, this is all jut so great the Joker GOAT-tards are just getting slaughtered as I knew they eventually would someday, <3's this thread. IDK if anyone's mentioned this yet but....

Nadal- The King of Clay: 5 major wins outside the French
Joker - The King of Winning at AUS and the weakening the rest of the year: 6 major wins outside Australian

The Nadal can only win on 1 surface argument can barely be used to defend Joker as GOAT anymore.

Fed
Nadal
Joker

It's settled.

<sarcasm>

Also looking back to Joker's era of dominance. There really wasn't much competition back then. He had an old fed, Nadal who can only win on clay, and a bunch of other weak guys that couldn't beat him. He dominated, so really that means everyone else was terrible. We didn't have guys like Tomas Berdych and Marin Cilic and Stan Wawrinka back then.

Also it seems to indicate Murray's peak was in April 2009 which makes zero sense considering he won nothing of consequence up to that point. He won 6 straight vs Federer outside of majors during 2006-2009, so if 2007 Federer is the GOAT I guess that could have that hilarious effect on his ELO? He had made 2/13 quarterfinal grand slam appearances, but has apparently never quite returned to that form despite going to 28/33 since.

So you should be able to take those ELO values and go back and plug them into a win probability model and see how close they are to historical match odds. Can't imagine they say anything other than Brazil is 1:1 to win the World Cup.

Agree, similar if lets say the big four are all out injured and for some random loads of players pull out here there and every where and lets say someone like Cilic goes on to win 3/4 slams, finals the other. Wins 7/9 1000 events.

He'd have a higher 'peak' than anyone.

Fed GOAT. Lock this thread up!

As a chess player, wanna say a few things about this Elo thing. Most chess players live and die by their rating to the point where they don't even refer to opponents by name but by numbers...

Person A: How is your tournament going so far?
Person B: Win against a 2100, draw against a 2000, lost to a 2200 etc

Elo ratings are a fine and good way to rate how someone is playing right at this moment and over the last year prior but that's it. No one would ever think of using "peak elo rating" across decades because it's ridiculous. A hot streak will always be responsible for whenever your peak was, the true test of it is how long you MAINTAIN your high Elo. My chess Elo over the board has been between 2000-2100 for the last 3 years or so, however there was a brief time it was 2120. By this deliberately deceptive way or presenting the data I'd be listed as better than I am.

Furthermore at the top level we care about titles because there are 2 different routes to get the same Elo rating. It takes into account your strength and the strength of your opponent and then does a point transference based on win expectation. You gain more points for beating someone much better than you, but lose very little if you lose to them, and visa versa. Therefor one can achieve a 2100 rating by always beating the players worse than them and always losing to players better than them. Another person may get there by not being as consistent against lower ranked opponents but also occasionally will put together some top level wins. Obviously the latter is preferable, better to be Stan Wawrinka than David Ferrer, but this won't show that. This is why they don't crown the World Chess champion by Elo rating, and no one even brings this up when trying to compare people in different era, the ratings can inflate or deflate over time depending on a variety of factors.

Lastly 1 point is a joke. As I said earlier chess players round to the lowest 100 pt group when classifying their opponent and result. 1 point is as meaningless as a penny.

Here are the pt differential win expectations vs a lower rated opponent:

1 point: 50.14%
100 pt: 64.00%
200 pt: 75.97%
300 pt: 84.90%
400 pt: 90.91%
1000pt: 99.68%

and I recall reading somewhere the margin of error is somewhere in the 50pt range.
