Since it's in the best interest of all parties (the schools, the coaches, the players, the FBI) that the NCAA not know why would it be surprising?

The schools are mostly self regulating and it still takes a couple years for the NCAA to finish an investigation. There is no one watching the store.

Is that right?
Yes, companies pay big money to schools to have their athletes where their branded shoes and uniforms. Of course the better a school is at a sport the bigger the games they will play in and the more fans that will see their brand.

The news today that is "shocking" is that these big companies pay relatively small amounts (in comparison to the exposure they get) to encourage really good recruits to go to one of the schools that they have a contract with.

What is in question is how much do the schools and coaches know about this. Are companies like adidas stalking the AAU circuit and telling good recruits that they will give them money if they choose one of their schools and let the kid and his family choose the school or are assistant coaches talking to people at the company and telling them who they want?

If the FBI had a wire tap and heard a UofL negotiating payments to a recruits family why wasn't he one of the coaches arrested?

I'd be VERY concerned if I were a dookie right now. Would hate to see K go out this way. His legacy would be in tatters. Let's see what develops.

edit: And in case it isn't obvious, the conduit is assistant coach Jeff Capel (who was busted at Oklahoma when he was their head coach).
you want it to be one way...

There's actually a part of me that is going to be a little sad to see Pitino get fired tomorrow. The UK-UL rivalry has been at its peak ever since it was Cal vs Pitino. Biased obviously, but since 2010 I think the rivalry has been better than Duke v UNC. But that is going away with the hammer Louisville is about to receive.

But on the other hand Pitino has had it coming.

If the FBI had unlimited resources I'd expect nearly every top 50 basketball school to get nailed for various shenanigans. Since they don't and I'm guessing they've just got a relatively small group working on this I imagine some very dirty schools will escape the net.

Who knows where things will go once people start snitching to get lesser sentences so maybe they'll manage to catch a lot more than anyone expects. If you think school rivalries are heated now just wait till some Louisville coach snitches on UK or Duke/UNC guys snitch on each other. Or maybe some guy at NC State just decides to squeal a free tip to the FBI about stuff he knows Duke and UNC were doing.

This is all happening because of one guy arrested for securities fraud rolling on everyone. It's not going to stop. These people won't go to jail before giving up more.

Just guessing here but it could be that no money ever actually exchanged hands. It was just agreed upon. The first scheduled payment was to be made in November is what I read earlier today.

Oversimplifying a bit, the problem is that the institutions are involved are federally funded, and that funding comes with rules about how those institutions can spend the money, who they can pay it to, and who can pay it.

grunching since this but.....

I'd think the kinda guys who want to pay off high school kids to get them into their alma mater is the same type of guy who wants notoriety for doing so. They may not be directly telling the coach, or AD....but I assure you, the word is out. These guys are letting it be known they are responsible for (insert 5 start recruit) coming to their school. Especially if they were not suspected to go to that school in the first place.

Both fingers crossed that neither Pitino or Jurich get fired and that everyone who got arrested is snitching on every other school. I want all ~150 schools who did this to get in trouble too if my school is going down.

Damn. Pitino allegedly told his staff that he expects to lose his job. Jurich supposedly met with members of the board and left after about 5 minutes. That can't be good. Looks like they both may be gone.
