Also, why don't more schools just do what Mizzou did and just hire the parent and pay them above the table? It takes their liability off the table while costing them the same amount of money.
So you're confused as to why the market for under the table bribes doesn't involve perfect information between the actors and the generally poor people asking for bribes don't get as much as they possibly could?

The criminal charges are super-contrived as typical by the corrupt Feds. If I am reading right they are saying the coaches 1) assisted with the making of payments which is against NCAA rules but does not break any laws-> 2) which made the players ineligible-> 3) which means they were not eligible to receive scholarships-> 4) coaches knew that players were ineligible since they helped them receive payments in first place -> 5) therefore coaches were involved in a "criminal conspiracy" to defraud scholarship funds.

Fine with Feds exposing this behavior but bull**** they are threatening these people with jail time over such non-sense. Standard overcharging by sleazeball Feds to exert leverage over defendants.

Just skimming the charging docs, it would appear that the charge is defrauding federally funded schools out of money and honest services. As in, the schools were tricked into giving certain scholarships to people under false pretenses and are harmed because they only have so many scholarships to give out and were exposed by Chuck Person to potentially enormous reputations and monetary damages when the scheme is found out.

So the victims are the schools. And I guess kind of the American tax payer..

Fun times for amateur sleuthing.

Start with every Adidas school, find their one and done players, cross check with list of Adidas sponsorships in the NBA.

Kansas (Wiggins and Embiid) jumps right out.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. Such trumped up charges and yes every program is doing this at some level and ALL the head coaches know it. It's the reason why recruiting coordinators and the coaches that the players are in contact with the most are assistants. Head coach only comes in at the end to close the deal. It's all setup for the head guy to be protected.

I suppose they could nail the families for tax evasion except the ones investigated this year haven't had a chance to file false returns yet.

Obviously they are, I'm just interested in who gets popped next and the Feds clearly have someone inside Adidas.

This will certainly come about. The IRS is always the secondary investigator to bring charges.

Agreed that it is all nonsense. That said there are real laws pertaining to "money under the table". The initial charges are just the beginning.

I never have nor am I currently saying he was clean historically. I just think he's likely to be now (like this class and the past couple). If you're paying players to come to your school why wouldn't you at least pay some of them to stick around when your next recruiting class is a little light or you have a positional hole?

I would be shocked if UK coaches were paying players. Now a UK booster paying a player wouldn't shock me.

"I have no idea what the hell is going on." Text from Pitino to terry meiner (Louisville media guy).

I just hope the FBI doesn't stop at these 10 schools. Either call out all ~150 schools doing this or let them go.

Also, lol at junking AU and Nike are laying $0 and adidas is so generous that they pay $100k.

Because they can't afford to compete with the NBA. $100k gets you a high school kid, but 1st round picks are guaranteed somewhere between 3 and 15 million dollars over their first 2 seasons.
