You really have to watch Fat Mike's presser where he explains this. it's a completely non-sensical incoherent rambling answer that is obviously just bs.

Woah, missed this and it really is thread title material

McCarthy us the fattest of MIKEs, but David Cullley punted on 3rd and 10.

can someone explain what McCarthy did at the end of the game? I can't find a description - just people going crazy.

edit: I guess he didn't run a 3rd down play?

The clock is stopped with 33 seconds left on 2nd & 6 in a tie game and FAT MIKE is at the edge of FG range at the 41. He then calls a run which results in a 3 yd gain with :29 and a running clock. Instead of using his final TO with :29 left OR calling another play on 3rd & 3 at the 38 he let the clock run down to :04 and his kicker banged home a 56 yd game winner.

Pretty sure Omar Mike is Mike Tomlin.

Pretty sure it had to do with punts.

Feel like it was probably something to do with putting points on the board, lifting spirits etc

I don't recall what got him the honors initially, but he solidified his spot during a post-game presser when he was asked about something stupid he did (I think kicking or punting on 4th & short) instead of something more aggressive (and sensible), and he answered, "We're not into that."

"After a Browns punt, the Steelers drove to a 4th and 1 on their 46-yard line in the closing seconds of the third quarter. From there, Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin decided to let the play clock run down to zero in an attempt to draw the Browns offside, and then punt the ball on 4th and 6.[48] Tomlin later received criticism for declining to attempt a fourth down conversion."

No wonder Cleveland scored on the ensuing drive. You make decisions like that one late in the game teams just going to start to feel deflated and how in the hell does Ben Roethlisberger even let that happen. They even had the between quarter break to think it over, geez.

Especially after watching their division rival the Ravens do so well with their analytical team and I'm fairly sure most of the NFL knows it at this point.

Does Tomlin think he is too good for it? Is it in spite of the Ravens or teams that are acknowledged to be heavily influenced in analytical based decisions?

It's like we can win without the GTO solver type stuff with Tomlin. **** gto.

I just don't get it.

I thought it was a question about letting the other team score instead of trying a heroic defensive stand near the goal line in which case his team, if successful, would have had no time left to try to score.

That's how he kept keeping/getting jobs; otherwise he would be working at Home Depot. It just isn't in him to transmogrify into a Riverboat Ron, even for a few seasons. If he hadn't been bailed out continually by his players, he would be on the streets.

I think it’s reversed. It was a game vs GB where Pit had it at like the GB5 in a tie game (maybe GB was up by 1) with only a minute or two remaining. GB has no timeouts left so Pit could have taken knees and kicked with no time left. They didn’t, they scored ASAP, and GB ended up getting into the redzone and got an endzone shot or two before ultimately failing, and losing. Mike was asked postgame why they didn’t just run out the clock and that’s how we were gifted the “I’m not into that” quote.

I could and likely have some details wrong but fairly confident that was the situation.

I think you're right. Is this the game? If so, holy crap that was almost 8 years ago.

The Chiefs won a game against Denver like that. Denver was up by 1 late and had a long breakaway on a pass play. If the receiver just went down they could have used almost all the time on the clock. Instead he scored to go up by 8, Chiefs came back and tied it and won in OT. I remember being happy when the receiver scored vs. getting tackled at the 10.

https://www.pro-football-reference.c...en.htm#all_pbp

Denver scored with 3 minutes, Chiefs were out of TOs.

Going down in bounds at the 1 runs it down to 2:20 (if the receiver is really smart he runs laterally for a while)
1st down runs it to 2 minute warning
2nd down (waste some time) runs it to 1:15
3rd down (waste some time) runs it to :30
4th down, kick FG

Squib kickoff, Alex Smith gets it back with 20-ish seconds, down 4 with no TOs. Has to be much better winning %.

Three minutes makes it closer. But I bet they run it in just the same if there's 1:45 left, which would be criminal.

Tomlin once called a run play on an earlier down with no timeouts inside the five down three where if they didn't get it time would run out. Bell barely broke the goal line. It was against San Diego if you want to youtube it.

I remember that one too. He also kicked an extra point down 18 once b/c he didn't want to show any 2 pt conversion plays for later in the season. You know, b/c teams can only design 2 of them, 3 at the most.

do you expect a WR catching a 76 yard TD pass, up 1, to go down at the 1 yard line with 3 minutes left? and do you alternatively, if he's smart, expect him to run laterally "for a while"?

that was 1 of 6 career TD's for Bennie Fowler. if he had just "went" down. come on.

I didn't say I expected him to with 3 minutes. I'm just saying it would have been the better play.

With 1:45, up 1, and Chiefs with no TOs, is when you'd start expecting players to go down. But still few would.

Damien Williams should have gone down in the Super Bowl. You can even see Mitch Schwartz pointing to the ground like why didn't he go down. If he goes down the game's over. When he scored it was only 99.9% over or whatever.

He cleverly took the DOG penalty so that he would not be ridiculed for punting from the 39. This guy may be too smart for the rest of the league.

He made the right call and TRUSTED THE DEFENSE, was hoping for momentum, play the field position game, maybe get a quick 3 and out, a turnover, etc.

i mean ffs why even take the field if you aren't gonna try to win?
