Once the brave young Englishman Justin Rose becomes the champion American golfer, I would like to propose another investment on English superiority over former colonies and in support of the ‘It’s coming home’ movement.

In these barren summer months, profitable investment ideas are harder to come by, but more gentlemanly pastimes like cricket are there to provide some opportunities for capital growth. Whilst individual games may provide the easiest returns (invest against Sri Lanka wherever possible), if our process requires the investment to still be available on Thursday, I can think of no better follow-up bet to Rose than backing the England Cricketing Team to be victorious in the ongoing World Cup. The only team of any concern is India, but with it hosted in England and Wales, our brave young men should be able to see them off in the final.

What are the rules for debating a proposal? Do we want to wait until other proposals are in? Or can we let fly whenever if we view an investment as good or bad?

I think the following 3 elements of a proposal should be included always

1. The outline of the INVESTMENT for those unaccustomed to that sport/type of INVESTMENT. For winning a tournament, an explanation of the format would be good (i.e is it a best of 3 series, are their pushes/draws etc)

2. The date and time of the conclusion of the INVESTMENT, for those looking for channels to sweat said INVESTMENT.

3. The current price expected to be received.

4. Are we looking to BUY an investment, or potentially SHORT a specific investment, if we as a group of Fat Pubbingtons believe more in a stock FAILING, as opposed to SUCCEEDING

The following is a bit more information as a prospectus for the partners

-----------------------

For reference, DER MARKT to win the Cricket World Cup is as follows

England $3.18 (+218)
India $3.5
Australia $4.2
New Zealand $9.8
West Indies $32

Upwards others.

The format is 10 teams in a group stage, full round robin (9 games), top four make the semi finals which are single elimination for two games. The tournament is halfway through so far, and it is almost certain that England will make the semi-finals, and that the other semi-finalists will be Australia, India and New Zealand.

The matchups are 2v3 and 1v4, with no real certainties as to which order the bracket will be.

We would essentially be INVESTING in a two leg parlay of England to beat India and either NZ or Australia (India will either play England in the semi finals, or be solid favourites (maybe -135/$1.75ish) to win the non-England semi final vs Aus or NZ)

Currently you can back England at $1.76 or India at $2.02 for their group game in two weeks. In reality, that market will probably settle at something around $1.83 England (-120) and India $1.90 (-110) for their group match, and we can expect a similar market for any potential final as well.

(forewarning that group game might involve SHENANIGANS as teams jostle for seeding. It is possible/likely the teams would want to meet NZ as opposed to each other in the potential semi-final round).

To add

The World Cup final would be on the 14th of July. The semi finals on 9th and 11th of July. It is likely that the INVESTMENT YIELD would remain similar to $3.18/+218 up until the 9th of July. If anything the yield might slightly go down if the bracket pans out with England and India on one side, and Aus/NZ on the other.

nope, no waiting necessary, fire away

the infoposts above are very good and i want to underline the fact that on betfair you can fade stuff as well as back it

fade Investments are just as eligible for consideration as traditional Investments

I sincerely doubt that our brave lads would attempt something like this in a World Cup.

Really quick.

I would be against backing England for the ODI Cup at that price for a few reasons.

1) Patriotic money always underprices England/USA and other large investment nations historically.

2) The structure of the Cup is basically a flippament, edges are narrow, and even with home field advantage, against competent opposition I find it hard to believe any team is better than 60% ($1.67) pre coin toss. If England were that price over two games, the fair price would be $2.78 (+178) and I feel they won't be when the time comes, they won't be that bigger favourites vs India or Australia. Betting the individual semi-finals might be a better idea closer to the date.

3) As an Upsidedownland investor, I find it morally reprehensible to be Investing in England. I realise I am likely in the minority.

Just my 2c.

All that said, given that we do not have any other potential INVESTMENTS on the table, and that investing is capped at 5% of liquid assets, I would still back in this investment over doing nothing, because why not.

Which is the inherent problem. It is more likely that the BRAVE LADS will end up with a tougher draw for the semi-finals, as other teams are SCALLYWAGS and angle for an easier semi final draw.

The final round of games are not played at the same time.

Englands final game is against NZ. Two days later, Sri Lanka play India and a few hours later Australia play South Africa

If NZ had top spot, India had second, 3rd was England with Australia half a point behind during their game, Australia might "accidentally" lose to South Africa to ensure they play NZ. India and NZ might also decide to act in bad faith and maybe accidentally lose a game they should win.

NZ have history of being scallywags here

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2001%E2%80%9302_VB_Series

New Zealand deliberately lost the 11th game of the series by enough to give South Africa a bonus point, and make it harder for Australia (the consensus best team in the world at the time) to make the finals in game 12.

Quote:
Australia needed a bonus point against South Africa to qualify for the finals. They lost the toss and were sent in to bat; however, they struggled early and were 7/195 in the 40th over, before Brett Lee scored 51 from 36 balls. Australia finished on 7/283, consequently needing to restrict South Africa to less than 227 to gain the bonus point. Nevertheless, it was not to be for the Australians, as Jacques Kallis compiled an unbeaten century (104), helping South Africa reach 227 with 16 balls to spare. They eventually finished on 250, and despite an Australian victory, the local team were out of the competition, upsetting many home fans.
Australia also has a history of being scallywags

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/19...icketworldcup5

Quote:
The problem was that once it was clear Australia were bound to win, it suited both teams for them to do so as slowly as possible. The Aussies had to win inside 47.2 overs to go through. They were always likely to do this after they had bowled West Indies out for 110 and got within 19 of victory with almost half their overs left. Then they stamped on the brakes. The game maundered on for another 13 overs, with neither team trying to end it.

Australia wanted to stop New Zealand, not out of some atavistic bit of regional hatred (though there's a bit of spikiness there) but because of the peculiar workings of the Super Six. A few days ago the consensus was that the system being used in this tournament was all rather elegant; its downside has now been exposed. Remember that teams who qualify carry through results against the opponents who go through with them. Because Australia beat West Indies but lost to New Zealand they want the team they beat to qualify. Got that?
Australia as a nation also have a history of MAXIMISING +EV by losing games in other sports, and as a nation we were absolutely 110% behind it at the time. (even though we whinged about the 2012 badminton, but whatever)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_F...ball_World_Cup

Quote:
At their final group matches between Australia and Angola, Australia rested their key players towards the end of the game, allowing for Angola to win 91–83, after the Boomers led at the half by double digits. Australia fell to third place, thereby allowing them to face the United States at the semifinals instead of the quarterfinals if they finished second. This so-called "tanking" was blasted by Goran Dragić, whose Slovenian team were defeated by Lithuania in the final group match, dropping them to second place, causing them to face the Americans instead in the quarterfinals if they reach that far. Dragic implored on FIBA "to do something about" it.[31]

Right after Australia's elimination by Turkey in the first round, FIBA announced that the Boomers were under investigation for tanking. Australia coach Andrej Lemanis rejected the accusation that they tanked, saying he rested his players for the next stage due to the heavy tournament schedule, adding that: "We always, as Australians, compete the right way".[32]

On 26 November 2014, Australia was cleared of tanking by FIBA.[33][34][35][36]
TL;DR I feel that Englands BRAVE LADS don't have the WIM to maximise their chances of winning by angling for a softer semi final, and that they would have stopped when up 4-0 vs Thailand compared to the USA who scored 13 in the womens world soccer.

I feel as investors we should be GORDON GECKO'S and that business is business as opposed to such things as ETHICS and MORALS.

Spoiler:
In all honesty I don't care, I just think playing devils advocate to rile up the BRAVE ENGLISH LADS is good banter and essential for INVESTMENT TEAM BONDING

Proposed INVESTMENT sizing change:

The purpose of INVESTMENT PROPOSALS is to try to maximise the increase in size of F&BPC capital. Occasionally, an INVESTMENT PROPOSAL might arise which has unprecedented, historic possibilities to increase the working capital of F&BPC. I would be displeased if such an INVESTMENT PROPOSAL is limited by a 5% usage of current capital.

Therefore I propose that, in the rare event of a PROPOSAL of such outstanding value appearing, partners may vote to waive the 5% limit in order to fully maximise the possible return of this historic-level INVESTMENT.

I would stress this ought only to be considered in truly GOAT level INVESTMENT PROPOSALS. For example, if for whatever reason one of the greatest boxers of all time, an undefeated world champion, were to compete against an amateur fighter with an 0-0 record, whose only remarkable talents are being fairly good at a vaguely related sport and self promotion, and an INVESTMENT on the world champion would produce a 25% return on invested capital, greater than if said world champion were to face an actual professional boxer instead.

64,

there does in fact exist a mechanism for what you describe: Special Resolutions

Special Resolution Proposals require the support of ten Partners. Once this threshold has been achieved, the Resolution is put up to an all-Partner vote. Partners are then given ample time to cast their vote

The Special Resolution will be Actioned if it achieves a simple majority at the ballot box

The Special Resolution process will take some time to go from Proposal to Action, which is fine - one wouldn't want to rush this sort of thing

There is no limit to the number of Special Resolutions which may be Proposed, but management reserves the right to control the timetable on such matters in order to protect against potential rogue Partner activity

But basically this, not a lot to invest in at the moment. Plus it might help civilise our American colleagues to learn about cricket early on, making the remaining year of the Partnership more pleasant for all involved
