Ultimately fantasy football is supposed to be fun. Once people start angle shooting, it makes me mad and it stops being fun. There is really nothing your commish can do, but I've always thought that if you have to ask, then you probably shouldn't do it.
This is totally unethical. Think about how it impacts the other teams in your league re: seeding. Also, think of other scenarios where you could throw a game to let a team into the playoffs so you could play them instead of another more deserving team. Imagine if this were done to you.
The reason it's okay for real professional sports teams to sit guys is because it's advantageous for them with regard to injuries and whatnot to sometimes not put their best guys at risk towards the end of the season. Sometimes this may affect other teams playoff chances unfairly because of the schedule, but it is still understandable because that team is maximizing its chance to win in the postseason and most importantly would be sacrificing something by continuing to play at full strength.
Note two things: First, this doesn't apply in fantasy football as guys are just as likely to get injured in the starting lineup as on the bench. Second, even though these professional teams are allowed to play their reserves, they are never, ever allowed to tank a game. They might do it, but it is highly unethical and definitely against league rules.
It's a really cheap angleshot to tank a game. You should be trying to win every single week because it is essential to league fairness and scheduling consistency that you put forth your best effort each and every game.
the problem is the way leagues are set up. playoff winner take-all format just encourages this type of behavior. to me, being forced to deliberately hurt your best interests is contradictory and unfair. i see nothing wrong with setting up your lineup the way you see fit so long as YOUR best interests are being served. setting your lineup up in a fashion to help your friend (for any incentive) is very bad obv.
i suppose i can understand if you dont want this going on in your league but there a couple ways to eliminate it.
you could simply make a rule that states all owners must make the best conscious effort to field the best team possible and if they dont the commisioner selects their lineup, or they could be penalized financially or otherwise.
a far better way to set up a league and mitigate this behavior is to have multiple prize pools. i play in a league that pays out for 1)most points that week 2)most points in the season (thru week 16) 3) best record 4) playoff winner.
now, situations where there is financial incentive to tank are very rare.
in this particular spot, tanking seems fine esp since your opponent is obv tanking.
if this happened, i would go into 'commissioner mode', and insert starters that were projected to have the best week.
we've had accusations of 'tanking' this year already to move up in the draft, the accused said he just 'forgot' to start a qb and a rb, so i put his best player at those two positions in, after the fact.
problem solved.
in yahoo leagues, commissioners have almost god-like powers. you can change someone's starters at 8pm on sunday night if you feel like it. post what you're doing, explain why, then do it, that's why you have a commissioner...
