Is Hamilton going to defend against Verstappen? He doesn't need to win. Finishing before Vettel almost locks up his 5th titel.

if max passes lewis at the start then lewis'll be sandwiched in between a slower RB ahead and a faster ferrari behind. whole race will be a nightmare. otoh if he stays ahead then max will slow seb down and he'll have a 5+ second lead by the time they all have to pit = easy win

i reckon he'll fight hard into turn 1

Yeah he has no right to be leading the title by 40 given the states of the cars. Only a Malaysia like retirement stops him now surely.

seems from reports that merc pulled some pit stop timing bull**** to get lewis past bottas and bottas is mad. was wondering how they'd deal w that situation

edit oh wasnt even that complicated, they simply told bottas to get out of the way

You have to run at least 2 different compounds of tyres during the race (assuming no rain), so at least 1 mandated pit stop.

Yeah that was what I was thinking. Lewis was still going to finish ahead of Vettel which is the goal and they clearly have the momentum at the moment pace wise over Ferrari so I struggle to see Vettel getting ahead of Lewis anytime soon.

i feel sorry for bottas but i think i agree with merc's decision. its motorsport and an engine blowout or first lap collision is always a possibility

no room for sentiment with a title on the line

Toto explained after the race that an engine failure in one of the remaining races means a DNF and a grid penalty so Mercedes wants a bigger buffer. Even Hamilton seemed to think that was bull**** especially when Ver still easily makes 5th from the back of the grid.
