They are €1.4bn in debt. €323m is already due in transfer fees. How much more can they just keep spending before the bank says no?

A fair amount more I'd wager.

barcelona still have the highest revenue of any club in the world. there are some ffp issues that might make it hard but the pandemic is ending so the rest is just a question of moving money around

You cant be this dense - you dont see the difference between Liverpool and Chelsea and the 3rd and 4th place teams in France? Ive honestly thought you were trolling before in suggesting it was a “tough league to win.” Mbappe is basically apologizing for even playing in it.

they were €279m in debt if you calculate it the way it's normally done in football (it's more now due to the pandemic tho)

Yeah €1.4bn in debt is very sensationalist but not a particularly useful frame for understanding their level of busto. Man United are €500m in debt but nobody considers that to be a problem (except for the fans wishing they'd invest the interest payments in the squad/stadium). The issue is whether they can service the payments or not. I'm not saying it's pretty, but some of the reporting around it is a bit OTT.

I agree, more context is useful, but take bank borrowing for example. It increased by 207m in the year to 2020, and I imagine will take a similar bump when the 2021 accounts are released. So that would be €500m due to the bank in short-term lending, and on the hook for other payments are are due imminently, such as what's owed on transfer fees (another 300m).

Regarding Bernardo, I don't see City letting him go for much less than £60-70m. I just don't think Barca can afford transfers of that value without selling, and they haven't really got the most valuable squad going.

Or to put it another way, there is a reason why the Spanish clubs and Juve were the ones pushing for the Super League, and this is it.

the transfer debt is also one of those things where people like to paint a far darker image than what is really going on. there's no good reason not to use net transfer debt

the limiting factor here isnt really what they can do financially. it's what they can get away with under ffp rules and the spanish ones are pretty strict

That debt we have isn't debt from transfers though, I'd be more than happy if it was an it was being serviced. It's debt to line the pockets of the **** glazers.

He said at the meeting a couple of weeks back that they have no intention of reducing the debt.

Let's compare 4th place Lyon to champs Man City.

In the '20 UCL, Lyon crushed MC 3-1 in the quarters
In the '19 UCL group stage, Lyon drew at home and won at the Emptyhad

Gotta be absolutely brutal for PSG having to play that type of quality in Ligue 1 week in and week out.

You're not seriously suggesting that Lyon are a better team than City, its hilarious they knocked them out though.

I'm bored so i'll bite,

CL last season Marseille and Rennes both finished bottom combined points 4, scored 5 goals and had a -19 GD. Lille got knocked out first round of EL. Reims failed to qualify and Nice finished bottom.

Year before, lyon qualified 2nd behind City despite beating them, Monaco finished bottom getting 1 point. EL Stras failed to qualify and Rennes and Saint won 1 game between them and out in the GS.

Nah, Ligue 1 sucks as much as I'd love for them to be more competitive. Still though, it's funny to flip the narrative based on whether PSG bottles the league or not.

Also comical that PSG will never touch Lyon's 7 titles in a row in the 2000s despite that era having a ton of parity and PSG now having 3x the wage bill of the next closest team.

Yea taking a homegrown 2nd keeper looks good.

Ben White looks to be a decent player. We need decent players, but highly superexciting stuff

Fairly expensive 2nd keeper that, didn't sheff utd pay like 20m for him? They'll hardly be taking a loss on him unless there's a relegation clause.
