instead of paying 3rd/4th, I'd vote to have a payout for the worst group record, and the worst of the last 16 (team that loses to a team that loses the QF, to a team that loses SF to the losing finalist).

Gives a decent sweat then for everyone, even if you draw Scotland or Germany.

The one we did for the WC at work was similar, except rather than straight worst in last 16, we did the first team to lose on penalties, has a similar aim of giving people with mediocre teams non-zero equity and creates immediate interest in early KO stage games

Yup definitely at executive decision time.

My suggestion:
-Get everyone to send £10 asap
- Set Thursday as day to draw, so set deadline of like 5pm Thursday to get the money in
- I think we'll probably get a few more stragglers as we go (particularly if we do one more round of the relevant threads
- If we don't get up to 24, the people that have already committed to 2 step up.

As for the payouts, since there's only 12 of us with 2 teams each, 3 get paid?

then either worst team in group stage (points, GD, GS, GA then yellow cards if it comes to that, remember Japan in the WC? Played the last 10 mins vs Poland just kicking the ball around cos they knew they were going through on yellows lol) or the first team to lose on penalties? If there are no penalty shoot-outs then it'll go to the worst team

So in that example whichever team is the worst after the group stage will be hoping for no penalty shoot outs, nice sweat
