I guess on that view, United repeatedly coming back and offering low amounts is more for show than anything else.
Some of the massive overpays have been directly his fault. Fellaini had a release clause and because he couldn't get deals done for any other CM he ended up paying like 10m more than what he could have signed him for a few weeks earlier.
Mourinho wanted Maguire and Woodward refused to fork out 50m, did he go to Maguire and his agent and say "listen don't sign anything because we'll be back for you next summer or in January" nah instead Maguire signs a new 5 year deal and when Woodward returns a year later is surprised to see Leicester now want 80m. He haggles all summer thinking he has some mysterious leverage and just ends up paying 80m.
We sold both Di Maria and Lukaku for the price we got them and I don't think we overpaid for Pogba given the market.

FWIW I think Sancho is worth 120m. His numbers are superb and looks like he will be an elite attacker for the next decade. It's much better to just pay for a premium talent than **** around signing guys at 30/40m and hope they bink. Also out wages represent only 50% of our turnover so we are in an incredibly strong position financially.

As bandit said this is the time because next summer, Madrid will go there’s €125m you want.
If Messi leaves next summer Barca will be looking to replace an entire front 3. I doubt new president gives much of a **** about Dembele. Sancho is elite and can play left or right in a 3. Benzema is 33 in a cpl months/Bale has been ostracized and the Madrid fans will have less patience for Hazard than Barca have for Dembele. When RITS said he expects them to spend 400m next summer I don't doubt it.
Not to mention that if Madrid do sign Mbappe from PSG then Sancho would surely be top of the list to replace him.
It's hard to see any scenario next summer where one or more of those clubs aren't in for Sancho.
