It’s pretty awesome that ESPN is showing the actual fight now. the commentary is great.

Perhaps my initial comment wasn’t clearly worded. My point is Buster was a fantastic athlete. If he had full focus he could’ve been one of the greats. It’s still pretty cool that he was a least a great for a little time

very nice episode...I forgot that Buster's mother died a couple of weeks before the fight. Those last three rounds were insane action for a heavyweight fight...can't believe they both survived that. It was like a Rocky movie.

classic case of one guy showing up in spades in elite condition and attitude, other guy mailing it in autopilot, "I'm Mike Tyson, lay down for my hook." Of course this same scenario often still results in the fave winning. Not his time. Would have been nice to see it coming as a connoisseur of long shots. Like maybe see the camps, only way. From the first second of the fight, one was way better.

the one casualfan argument I do enjoy is Ali vs Tyson. They were both dominant in their era, but Tyson didn't just win he destroyed the other guy. But Ali might have been playing for the cameras the first few rounds...

I've often marveled and that potential matchup. Even asked a boxer who said Ali hands down, which surprised me. Joe Frazier was a ton of trouble for Ali every time, and he was nothing compared to Tyson, imo. Same thing coming in bobbing and weaving but WAY stronger and faster. I would have to take Tyson even though nobody ever stopped the young Clay/Ali, I don't think he could stand up to it. KO.

Mike Tyson being heavyweight champion of the world at age 20 is one of the most incredible records in sports. Getting rid of Kevin Rooney as his trainer, was the start of Tysons downfall

Yeah, losing Rooney was huge, probably equally huge was Cus dying.

I still remember exactly where I was when I found out Tyson lost. A dude showed up at a party and spread the news and everyone thought he was ****ing with us.

Ali withstood George Foreman and he might be a more powerful puncher than Tyson.

People really underrate Ali's chin. He took a left hook from hell against Frazier and got up like it was nothing.

I don't think Ali would Rope'a'dope against Tyson.

Little doubt in my mind that nobody could have beaten Buster Douglas that night. Ali could never get to him, Foreman would have been knocked down multiple times, Lewis could never hit him and would lose a lopsided decision, and we saw what he did to Tyson.

Ali admitted after the fight he had no idea what he did after the Frazier knockdown. It was pure instinct that he got up.

Ali wins that fight in the press conferences beforehand. Tyson with Cus in his corner might’ve had a shot at tuning it out, but he was just an angry young man at his core and I feel like Ali would’ve still gotten deep into his head.

So true.... He would have turned Tyson into a bubbling 5 year old.

It definitely worked against Foreman, who basically was throwing everything he had early rounds to literally kill Ali.

It's ironic too because IMO Foreman and Tyson seem to be extremely intelligent guys. I'm sure with Foreman's different outlook when he was older he would be able to manage his emotions a lot better

Regarding tysons rape charge: is this just forgotten by everybody or forgiven? I'm not a huge boxing fan and was barely old enough to recall him in his early days but what's the consensus on this? The dude was found guilty of rape right? He served his time yada yada....but dude is in movies and generally regarded as a good natured likeable guy now.

No definitely not and tbh I never really liked Tyson as a person, great boxer thou.

For someone who grew up on the streets he wasn't very streetwise.

Regarding the rape charge, I have never really looked into the evidence/case. Does the evidence make it apparent that he was guilty? Tyson still denies it to the day. Tyson has admitted to doing a lot of things that make you think ‘why would you ever admit to that’. For whatever reason I feel that if Tyson did do it, he of admitted it at some point or in some interview. I could just be an idiot...

were you in California at this point in time? asking because i was at a party with a few hundred people during the fight and the host picked up the mic and said something to the effect of 'you won't believe me now because you think i'm drunk, but in the morning you'll learn Buster just beat Tyson'.

What on earth would make you look at someone who:
  • was convicted of rape
  • accused by his ex wife of being abusive
  • bit someone's ear off in a boxing match

and think to yourself, "Hmm, I wonder if he's actually guilty"?
