Haven't had a chance to watch Rand U yet but the previews sound like it's narrated by Michael K Williams (Omar). Pretty great if so

I didn't need to know so much about the other Rand U grads besides Moss (his hs buddies)

I did find it rich when Bowden was talking about he wanted to save his boys, and all this bull ****. Moss probably lucky he didn't end up in that corrupt town allowed to roam free and do whatever he wished with no consequences.

I thought the doc was really good. I didn't realize he went to FSU and that Heisman class my god. Manning, Woodson, Moss, loLeaf.

It was ok, but I think it went way too easy on Randy.

The earlier Iverson one, No Crossover, was excellent and far more objective.

No Crossover was very well done

Rand U was not much of a documentary. Could easily have passed as an episode of "A Football Life."

probably?

seems like they're running out of ideas with these things:

- Big East basketball
- BC point shaving (moar Big East basketball!)
- 70s Knicks! (already had 90s Knicks before)
- football player profile: Bosworth
- football player profile: Moss
- coming soon!: the U part 2 (yes, seriously)

maybe they should slow down until they come up with some better and more unique topics

70s Knicks was good though. Way more important that lol 90s Knicks. Big East also good and worthy. BC point shaving was way before Big East main stories.

BC point shaving is a good example of topics that are worth covering. The U II (Seriously?) is not

yeah the BC one is fine, just pointing out that they've had a bunch that are kinda similar (basketball in northeast USA), and maybe not super interesting to everyone. i mean if they just wanna jerk off their base for cheap ratings then whatever, go for it. i just happen to think that there are more interesting stories out there. probably a lot of sports haven't had one 30for30 yet.

(****, give me one on that rowing video from the other day or something)

I'd like to see one on the early 70s Raiders. They were all nuts. There are a bunch of great AFL stories from the 60s too.

Something on the ABA would be good

Maybe on the WFL or UFL, too.

Certainly not the XFL, tho.

Yeah that ABA would be a lot of fun. Any alternate league can be interesting. The USFL doc (Small Potatoes) wasn't awful.

The StL. Spirits ABA one was ok, but it was largely a retread of Terry Pluto's ABA book Loose Balls. I liked the USFL one.

I doubt they will ever be as insightful as the original 30, which was nominally trying to return us to the atmosphere of the designated year. Lately they sound like E! got into sports.

Vince McMahon refused to give them footage so that probably killed at least 2 good 30 for 30's. The ones I'd like to see:

Billy Martin

The 2 Yankees players who switched wives and kids forever. Weird but would be interesting.

The 85 Bears

Lawrence Taylor

The baseball card boom in the 80's to it's rapid decline in the 90's

A documentary on Baseball cards would be hard to do but I'd get excited about it

Some other possibilities:
  • When Csonka, Kiick and Warfield jumped to the WFL after the Dolphins' 2nd Super Bowl win.
  • The '86 Masters
  • Jean van de Vele's British Open collapse.
  • Dwight Gooden
  • '69 Mets
  • something on sports betting

tiger woods: one night in november

but seriously

bill james/sabermetrics

definitely billy martin/earl weaver

yasiel puig/other cuban defections

simmons mentioned the Oakland Hyatt on one of his recent pods, saying he would love to do a 30 for 30 but nobody would go on the record. He also mentioned it in this article. Sounds fascinating.

Quote:
7. During the Cocaine Era (1977-1986), the Warriors somehow ended up with three of the league’s most notorious coke guys (King, Richardson and Lucas) and an interesting stigma: As legend had it, the Oakland Hyatt (where visiting teams stayed) was the best place in the league to score drugs, so struggling players routinely fell off the wagon during their Golden State trip. Oh, and if you’re scoring at home, the Warriors didn’t make the playoffs for nine straight seasons … from 1978 to 1986. Everybody lost in Oakland. Even the visiting players.

Cocaine in sports is probably decent. That Oakland story and the Pittsburgh Pirate slanging should be enough to fill 90 min or so.
