with the firepower they have on the bench, and tuchel making the adjustments, you better get out ahead of chelsea in the first half if you outplay them

If there was justice your owner and your best player today would both be in jail.

Well I see spurs took Game Zero literally - 0 goals, 0 points.

We were pretty good with our good players on and then horrendous when we took them out. I think the next step is quite obvious for Nuno…don’t play the good players anymore.

About what? That it's too hard for footballers to participate in the game directly after being brought on and they should get a few minutes to get acclimated? Or that it'd make a significant difference in Noble's conversion percentage? I'd disagree with both.

You'd be wrong then.
Why do you think team warmups before kick off aren't just stretching but involve ball work too?
Why do you think punters in the NFL practice on the sidelines?

Noble had been sat on his arse for 90 minutes.

He'd been sitting for 45... Noble has missed pens before. There's really no way to know.

Anyway, the whole thing is pointless and I guess annoys me because it's a solution to a non-existent problem. People and especially Lineker love to talk about ho-hum stuff being so difficult and come up with stuff like practice nets in this case, when the obvious solution I you're so worried is to let any of the other 11 guys take the penalty. I'm short, pro footballers don't forget how to kick a ball in 45 minutes and there's no need to act like every little thing these guys do is so incredibly difficult and meaningful.

You're right. He walked to the dressing room, sat on his arse for 10 minutes and then walked back. My bad.

I'm fairly sure there's a number of examples when players came off the bench to take a pen and scored.

Unless there's some data on this it seems like results orientated hysteria.

Of course they can score a good % of the time, but I am with Pete that bringing in a player into a high pressure situation at the end of the game "cold" is sub optimal. Didn't shock me Sancho and Rashford missed in the Euros. Didn't surprise me Noble missed today. It is very results orientated.

Don't think any of the United incidents were pens tbh. Ronaldo initiated the contact and basically went into his body on the one where there kind of was a leg dangled.

I'm on this team. There's obviously a lack of data, but my guess is that not having kicked a ball is offset by:

a) getting your best penalty taker on the pitch
b) not being mentally exhausted from playing 90/120 mins

I think that if the euros situation didn't happen 2 months ago then nobody would be talking about it.

Its not an exclusive argument its a linear one.

Yes it might be better to have your best PK taker cmon even if "cold", but even better would be to give them 5 minutes or so.

I suppose with VAR now there's gonna be cases where you've got those five minutes to spare

a) What is the difference between your best and worst penalty taker? Assuming you don't have someone elite like Kane or Jorginho, it's probably 1-2 kicks/100. I doubt this is enough to offset having not kicked a ball.

b) "Mental exhausted" is a pretty nebulous concept. Is there any evidence that conversion is significantly worse in a shoot-out v normal play, and this can be attributed to mental exhaustion and not physical exhaustion or external factors?

Agree. Keeping Sterling on for 120 and not taking a kick v bringing Sancho/Rashford on for 20mins was likely a significant error.
